Work Order to Production Management conversion

  • 1.  Work Order to Production Management conversion

In line to do our first migration from Work Order to Production Management.  Testing with the XYZ company data was fairly straight forward but that is not real world.  Any huge gotcha's that we need to be aware of? I saw the post about issues importing work tickets.  That will not be an issue.

We're in the middle of a test upgrade. One gotcha is that if you have any UDF's or customizations in BM, be sure to run the CM utilities or you won't see where to have default work templates set up. (Of course, that should be done anyway!) Some routings converted cleanly while others did not. Haven't gotten to the bottom or why that is yet.

Form conversions are a nightmare. This customer had a very customized traveler and I cannot replicate it (yet!).

Let us know how yours goes @alan niergarth!

@Therese Logeais this customer's travelers are also highly customized.  will keep that in mind.  No B/M UDF's so that is a plus.  But they do have other enhancements that step on SO (Kissinger EDI) so this will be our first hurdle.

I noticed that the JT_JobTicketHeader converted from WO1 with all work orders that were not completed.  They said they weren't converting history and it's true; I was hoping this meant that weren't converting the 'history' tables, but they also mean not converting the completed orders.  Bummer

However, I did notice that JT_JobTicketSteps did have all work orders, not just the ones that it converted to JT_JobTicketHeader.  Once I get the client to SQL, I'll clean that up

UDFs didn't get created in PM from WO, but that wasn't expected.  After creating the UDFs in PM, I had to create an import.  That was okay.  But one odd thing ... If I had, say, 1000 work tickets and my source file for the import had say 1500 work orders with UDFs, it actually created 500 useless work tickets for me.  The import log said import failed on those extra 500 but they still got created anyway.

And before you ask ... yes, this was on the correct (Apr 2020) build!

I believe one hidden gotcha was serial numbers. If you use serialized inventory the old WO used to let you create a range of serial numbers. With Production Management my understanding is that you have to create those serial numbers one by one.

Still waiting on a fix for the serial number issue.  I reported to Scanco in JANUARY and they still haven't fixed it.  I talked to Darin last week and gave him the details again because their development team didn't understand what the issue was.  I told him to ask them to do a WO completion entry for 500 units of a serialised item and then run the same transaction in PM and then they would know....

Sage now considers the incremental assignment of serial numbers at completion an "enhancement" that has been submitted for consideration in a future release now per KB article 103587.  Work Order did this out of the box for 20 years....  Bottom line, if you have a client that makes serialized items in any quantity make them aware of this issue before converting.  It's a giant PITA for the first one we did and I can't give them any idea when PM will work like the old module it replaced.....

    @Bernie Lehman and All,

Welcome to the world of Scanco and "enhancements" - the catchall response for features blatantly missing, or poorly designed.  Another common response is "it wasn't designed to do that ... "  .... well duh!  I have had to deal with these type of responses for years through the various ownership of JobOps.

The following also may not be news, and may be in another thread, but the fact that IRP - which 'replaces' MRP - doesn't blow through BOM's.  And when I recently asked about when that would be incorporated, they couldn't give me an answer.  That one really dumbfounds me.

Aiy, @Jane Scanlan - that BOM issue with IRP makes me crazy, too.

Another issue I'm experiencing is that if the WO routing started with step 0010 instead of 0000 then they did not convert correctly to templates in PM. You can see the steps in WT Template Maintenance but the steps, etc. do not carry over in WT Entry.

If you select one of the above templates, you get an an error stating "The Template Header record does not exist."

Why they started the routings with step 0010, I cannot say but it's a bit messy.

We ran across this issue on a recent PM conversion too but got lucky and caught it in testing.  Had to import step 0000 to every routing in WO and then it converted properly.

I hope the serial number field gets expanded at the same time.  I have a customer that regularly has to truncate vendor serial numbers so Sage 100 can accommodate them.
