After 10 years, client is thinking about using WO.  As with many steel fabricating shop, they cut many different parts from a plate of steel in one operation..  How are others handling this operation?  10 different parts, 10 separate WO's?  Create a work order to disassemble the 10 parts (putting into inventory) and transact (adjust) the raw material used out of inventory?  Does anyone have a WO enhancement that does this?  And yes, everything could possibly change once the PM rewrite is released.

    Jeff,

Whether you use WO or PM your question remains the same.  If I understand you the question is "How do I take 1 sheet of steel and divvy it up into several different finished goods/work tickets".

    One possible solution:

    ·         Have an item code (example: 24 gauge Stainless 4' by 8') for the sheets of steel  - that sheet of steel should always have the same weight. This item is inventoried in "each" or "sheet" etc.

    ·         Create a second item code (example: 24 gauge Stainless LB) this is the same type/gauge steel but this item is inventoried in pounds.

    ·         When they are ready to cut a sheets into several finished goods, Take the 24 gauge Stainless 4' by 8' sheet(s) out of stock and add the equivalent pounds of 24 gauge Stainless LB  into stock.

o   This could be an inventory adjustment, BOM disassembly, or work order transaction.

    ·         Create the bills of material/work orders for the finished goods the steel component would consume X pounds of 24 gauge Stainless LB

o   These work tickets will pull the pounds of steel out of inventory.

o   Whatever 24 gauge Stainless LB pounds are left in inventory at the end of the run will represent the leftover scrap

§  Issue that scrap out of stock daily/weekly/monthly to a scrap GL account

Some of these steps can be eliminated by simply creating one inventory item for each gauge/type of steel and purchase it in Sheets (or whatever), but always inventory and consume it in pounds.

    Thanks,

Close but not quite.  Question is how do I make 10 different parts out of the same sheet of steel without creating 10 WO's (each part) and then how do I divvy up the labor running the laser cutter?  Actually, the 10 different WO is more important than the labor question.

Do you need the complexity of WO?  BM Disassembly Entry might be able to do the multiple outputs from one input.
A quick look shows that the components created seem to be editable on the fly...

@Kevin Moyes  I think you are on to something with BM Disassembly.  I have a customer that used to manufacture rolls of tape (they sold this division several years ago).  They would buy a tape in "log" and cut the log up into smaller rolls of tape of different widths.  I used BOM and put in negative components.  Production entry would add the components (cut tape rolls) to inventory and reduce the bill (log).

We looked at this years ago for a client in the lumber industry.  They wanted their raw material costs to flow to finished good lots proportionally (based on expected revenue of the different quality outputs) so we couldn't use this strategy for them, but the idea stuck with me.
