Will this work? Client running SAGE 100 Standard version 4.40. Their new IT support company wants to replace the server where SAGE 100 is installed with a new computer (server). The quote includes a new box (server), HD, and switch, but does NOT include a new OS. Can they just restore from a backup from the old server, the OS and all data files onto the new box? In this case, do I have to re-install SAGE 100 on the new server (box)?? Will I have issues installing future product updates or upgrades?

Pretty sure I've had people take an image and restore without an issue. I'm probably not using the right terminology but I'm pretty sure I've seen it done.

I'm assuming they are restoring from an image of the hard drive? if so then since it is Standard and not advanced, For the most part you would probably be OK, all the registry entries should be there for future upgrades. some things to consider (this is probably not a complete list): is the server Name and IP address going to stay the same? are there any integrations or software communicating with Sage that rely on the server name and/or IP address? (PC Charge comes to mind) if they are using paperless office to e-mail you will want to make sure that works.

Thanks Wayne and David. Client is using just the basic features of A/P, GL, and P/R with a VI import to Payroll. No CC or Paperless Office yet.

If you don't have an actual install, you will have potential issues adding service updates down the road. I'm pretty sure an OS is required if you plan to install. That said, I think it would 'work' but I'd push against it if it were me

That almost sounds like they are purchasing a NAS (network attached storage) appliance and not a Windows Server. We've had clients that were able to install Sage 100 Std to the NAS from a Windows PC, but I really doubt that's a supported configuration.

Unless this is an identical box from a driver point of view, I think you will find you have to install Windows. Restoring an image onto different hardware is asking for a mess when it boots...

@SteveIwanowski Its not going to be a NAS device the old server will be ""shut down"" @PhilMcIntosh From an e-mail to the client it sounds like they are planning to restore an image to the new hardware. The e-mail talks about ""then synchronize the changes"" whatever that means. We'll see what happens next Monday.

It looks like it worked! The IT guy was able to restore an image of the prior server onto a ""bare metal box"" (new server). He then adjusted the drivers for the new internals (hard drive, motherboard, etc.), re-registered the Windows Server operating system. SAGE 100 Standard was then tested from several workstations. It's been 3 days and no issues. I plan to allow for extra time if I need to install a new Product Update, Tax Table Update, etc. in the future.
