What's the first version that goes into archive mode if Sage subscription is cancelled? I have a customer flirting with certain death...

Is this what you need? My customer was on 2015. From Scott Brady @ Sage: Based on your screenshot, you are on Sage 100 2015 with Product Update 3 installed (PU3). For you to have Read-Only Payroll, you must install the latest update for that version Product Update 5 (PU5) and also install the program fix LM5022T which can be access from the article I referred to KB82689.

Versions of Sage 100 and Sage 100c which auto-update keys: 2015.5+ 2016.2+ 2017.0+ Note: Versions 5.20.3 (2015.3), 5.20.4 (2015.4), 5.30.1 (2016.1) will have the ability to update the payroll expiration date with the Update button by installing the Hot Fixes based on version KB 83158 ( https://goo.gl/NnlQbY ). Note: Some third parties such as Job Ops may require a new registration key if the Sage USER KEY (not customer number) changes. The update process does not change customer or serial number but the Sage 100 USER KEY changes. To force an auto-update of keys: - Open Library Master, Setup, System Configuration, Registration - Click Update button If keys do not auto-update you can try to force an update of the product registration: - Open Library Master, Setup, System Configuration - Click the Registration tab - Click Activate or click Edit then click Activate Even with Sage Update Advisor uninstalled and PEP turned off, license checks continued. There does not seem be a known way to block these registration checks. Per phone contact with Sage - the ""update"" program is using a URL to 'phone home'. If the URL is blocked in anyway, it seems that it causes problems. I finally got Sage to give me the url that the 'Update' program is using - and of course there is no way to turn if off.. Once we had our client's IT person 'allow' it through the firewall the update then worked. If anyone needs it, here is the URL (and YES IT IS MISPELLED at the end) licensing.servi.../LicenceService if you go to it via a web browser you should get 'error 400 no required SSL certificate' if the web site is blocked you would get a different error like blocked by firewall or site not found.. Sage was supposed to write this up and put it on the KB Update 1/13/2017 - The full URL https://licensing.services.sage.com/lic/services/LicenceService It does not appear you can block access to the above URL: Sage KB: Could not contact the license and subscription service in the allowed time. If the problem continues, please contact Sage Support. https://goo.gl/tKUkHJ

Watch Out: I agree with @JaneCavanaugh if all you need is to view or print Payroll Reports in read only mode. If you want to be able to view Employee records in Employee Maintenance or select other menu choices, v2015 PU#5 will not allow it. I have found that if the client wants to continue to use the Payroll module, say as a Human Resource database, add new employee records, or actually continue to prepare and print payroll checks, then they need to go no further than v2014 PU#7. Any future missing updates will need to be handled outside of SAGE Payroll. W2 printing, ACA reports, etc.
