What is the best reason/explanation for running MAS 200 as a Service or an Application?

I think number of users. After a certain number, the service tends to go south unless you do some registry hacks. Usually, 10 is the cutoff for me. Any # over that and I run the application as the IT staff usually doesn't want to do the hacks.

Service = easy to login automatically on reboot Application = what Jeff said (and there's a hack somewhere that was posted which allows the app to login upon reboot as well)

Thanks to both of you ... of course I'm trying to find how to automatically start up the App Server upon reboot and can't find it. I've printed it out, and/or stored it electronically somewhere and can't find it (typical).. can you direct me to the posting that has the steps?

One would think Sage would design running as a Service properly, so a registry hack is not required.

In case I have the opportunity, which registry records would I hack to make the service run correctly?

I go 100% service. I don't like the application route. Once you do the SS-3003 it runs like a champ. Btw. The registry hack is from Microsoft and expands the memory space for services. Totally supportable.

@JimWoodhead you've got guts. I completely envision the customer's IT department burning me at the stake the first time that server has the slightest sniffly nose....

Love the conversation and everyone's input, so, one last question for @JimWoodhead: why is running as a service better, besides that it is easy to setup and auto start on reboot?

@wayneschulz. Registry hacks are a nature of windows. They are to be expected. Plus this one is more of a memory configuration setting.. And only has to be done once. @JaneScanlan I like because it is a lot hassle once it is going. No worry about logging in and out of the server and MAS accidentally getting shutdown. No additional explanations to the it staff that you need to always manually start it up the application and lock the terminal. It is a set it and forget it configuration. Lastly one it is configured it just works.
