What are the possible causes why GL Inventory balance does not match inventory valuation report?

If this can be conclusively answered I can make a very long time client happy.

Do we have the same client? Anyway, isn't that what 90 Minds is all about. Let's hope someone has an idea.

GL inventory balance as in the general ledger?

Here's some thoughts: - G/L Journal Entries were made directly to the G/L Inventory account(s), independent of your subsidiary modules (e.g., I/M, S/O, P/O, etc.). - Something was posted in the future. - Valuation changes were made in the I/M module but no related G/L entries occurred. - Dug up this old FAQ: Why is the Inventory Valuation Report total different from the General Ledger Detail Report total for the Inventory account number? The Inventory Valuation Report is a real time report. It includes all the transactions that have been entered into the Inventory Management system as of the moment the report is printed. The General Ledger Detail Report prints transactions based on the posting dates. Normally the General Ledger Detail Report will be printed as of a specific date and it will only include transactions posted up to that date. You can not print the Inventory Valuation Report as of a specific date because it will always include all transactions entered into the Inventory Management system. As an alternate to the Inventory Valuation Report, the Inventory Trial Balance Report can be used to reconcile the current period of the Inventory Management Module to the General Ledger Module. - Maybe this will also help: http://www.sagesoftwareonline.com/sw_attach/kdb.asp?isresolutionconceptid=1382

I think as mentioned by Brett, the Inventory Trial Balance is the only report that can be used to reconcile to GL. This is because it is based on the transaction date. The same is true for AP and AR.

On the other hand, if all Daily Transaction Registers have been posted, the Inventory Valuation report SHOULD agree with the GL when run. Is that your situation, @ZalmiBerger?

Thank you all for your great response. Joining this group was the best decision I made in a long time!

I have a slightly different twist on this - why would the inventory valuation report not balance to the sum of the inventory transaction history file? MAS 90 4.40.06 with JobOps. I ran the IM_BALANCEQTYONHAND_UI utility, and it found a couple of things but not enough to close the $5000 gap.

Following up on Phil's comment - I thought the change in 4.40 was to unify the IM transaction, costing and qty on hand tables so they are all based on the same source. But obviously this is not the case. I have had multiple clients with out of balance quantities when running the IM_BALANCEQTYONHAND_UI utility. Was my initial assumption incorrect on the new framework logic?

If we all start to have customers who actually pay attention to their inventory values (instead of fudging for taxes) we could have problems....

Well this customer uses paperless office to save the valuation report daily, as well as the JobOps WIP report, and keeps a spreadsheet of those report values as well as the corresponding GL accounts on a daily basis.

We upgraded a customer from 4.3 to 4.4 last February and there were some huge adjusting transactions entered in 4.3 in order to balance the inventory. I know there is a log of this somewhere but I cannot remember where it is. Anyone know the location?

    ..\home\textout\ folder I believe.

I don't see it there. That's where I looked first.

@ThereseLogeais - from what I can see on this customer, those are the IX transactions, which have dollar values but no quantities, but are very strangely dated (10/31/1938 in this case for a transaction date, but the reference date is the date of the upgrade).

Try doing a search for .log files. Are you looking in the 4.30 folder or 4.40?

No, they were IA transactions added to 4.3 dated 12/31/10 (they were in period 1 when we upgraded). I believe the pre-migration utility adds transactions (that do not post to the GL) in order to balance the transactions to the quantities on hand and that they post to the last closed period. Now this customer wants to compare current inventory levels to prior years (I wrote a Crystal report using the transaction detail to get the prior year levels but, unfortunately, all those IA's dated 12/31/10 are skewing the numbers).

If not in the textout folder, maybe look up a folder level or 2. I usually move it to the Version4 folder level.
