We were having a discussion today in our office about ""showing"" certain clients when and how to run the Rebuild Sort Files. We were split right down the middle about this topic. Does anyone else share this with the more knowledgeable client?

For sure.. particularly sales order and purchase order with ""Yes"" to ""Do you want to recalculate open inventory quantities."" I train the more knowledgeable clients to rebuild sort files one every 3-4 weeks to keep the ON SO and on PO quantities accurate.

Yes, for some it is part of the month-end close checklist.

I don't have any problem with clients rebuilding sort files - it's a very harmless utility. I don't show them how or when to rebuild key files though, as I've seen clients who've been shown how to do this go crazy with rebuilding key files because they think that will solve whatever error they are having instead of calling us for support. I also recommend as does Debbie to include the rebuilding of sort files in their month end processes.

    Yep, sure do.

I'll show them anything they want with appropriate caveats. Very few want to go too far.

I agree with showing them how to do more themselves, but when they get into trouble, some of the say "" but you said....

Sort files, no problem. Rebuild key files. Not so much in the new framework. Reinitialize files? Only if you want to teach them a lesson about the value of having a good backup..............

Generally it all depends on the client but sometimes you just never know. We have one client, the company is actually an IT group. everyone there is pretty astute when it comes to technical stuff. They were shown how to rebuild sort files. One day instead of rebuilding sort files for SO, PO and IM... the system administrator accidentally reinitialized SO, PO and IM. But still I go with what Wayne said I'll teach anyone what they want - its up to them what they chose for me to do and what they want to handle. I also agree with Debbie - I do also advise some to make it part of their month end process.

We've never made it a part of month end close but we we should do that as well. It seems as if several others already have so it must be working!

I don't disagree with everyone. If they want to learn how to run the utilities, I will show them. As they say, guns don't kill people, people kill people.....

And there's 1,000 acres of Ocala National Forest to dispose of the bodies. Did I say that out loud?

Good points all. Rebuild sorts are unfortunately a normal procedure these days. All sage 100 system admins should be able to run them. @RobertWood we are glad you came clean? ;).

When I say ""them"" I mean my primary contact or the IT department. If I'm out in the warehouse I'm not showing the shipping people who to DFDM or Rebuild Key Files.

@JimWoodhead, have you guys (DSD) ever looked into developing an Enhancement to automate the rebuilding of Sort files via some sort of Scheduler? Seems like there's a market for that. https://90minds-com.socialcast.com/messages/9581146

This is a client by client type discussion which is why there will always be a split and no definitive answer. The more they break the more we fix. Some clients can't handle the truth!
