We have a customer who thinks they need an internal project manager. Long story short, they need far more than that, but I need to help them explore this. This is a good ol' boy firm that writes NOTHING down, and yet they are $25mm with 10 locations. So, herding cats. Anybody out here with formal project manager-hiring experience who could spend a few minutes with me outlining what the job requirements should look like? i'd really appreciate it.

If this is a full time position, what does this person do when the ERP project is over?

The professor from a project management class I took in grad school encouraged students to pursue the PMP certification. PMP stands for Project Management Professional. If this is a full time project management position, the PMP certification may be one of the minimum qualifications. http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx

Mark, this is a weird request. We have their ERP implemented. But there are additional projects they want to do involving varying areas of technology. They don't get anywhere on these efforts and are pointing fingers at why. The real reason is that the owner has ADD and his GM is not much better. The only time a project ever has anything written down about goals, etc., is when we propose a project. Fundamentally there is nobody there, except possibly the Controller, who understands that accountability starts with a clear definition of the problem to solve. For example, they saw nothing wrong with authorizing a web/software project to expose customer service jobs to customers without any written spec or plan. Now they're frustrated that after $30k they have nothing to show! The problem is political more than technical, but it took me 90 minutes talking with our ally/sponsor to get her to see it that way! So, I think if they proceed down this path, there is FT work here for quite awhile, but I also think it inevitable that he/she will get ""knifed"" in the first year. Ideas?

We are just finishing the hiring process. We ended up using a search firm. http://www.i-bn.com/company/careers.html We did not require a PMP although our final candidates were ITIL and CAPM certified.

    Thanks, Gary. That's helpful.
