We had an internal meeting today on the new changes in Sage Payroll Maintenance. An interesting suggestion came up that I thought I would run by the group. Historically you could pay maintenance early and extend your current maintenance plan. So for example, we have a customer with payroll that comes due in October. Should we pay maintenance in September before this new plan takes effect we could extend the current payroll maintenance plan 13 months (1 month left plus 12 new months) and defer this cost for over a year! Do you think this could fly? Does anyone have a good contact in Sage to run this by? Our rep would be 0 help.... @Businessofconsulting

Worth a shot but I doubt it. With these types of policy changes, everyone at Sage seems to run on a different playbook.

I haven't read all the information on this new change or all the discussion and can't be the first to think this, but how is Sage going to know/prove how many employees are being processed by a company?

I don't know other than Sage Advisor and/or a mandatory update required by all future payroll updates. This may also be part of the reason for shoehorning the process into the Q4 time period when users need to load IRD and other year-end updates such as tax tables. Seems likely that there will be some type of phone home connection to tell Sage the number of employees. Anybody's guess as to whether the count will be active employees or total employees.

I understood from the webinar that this was being phased in begin with November renewals and would be completely transitioned by October 2016. Therefore, the October renewals should be safe from the new policy until they renew in 2016.

Probably a self reporting honor system. Sage will issue keys based on how many active employees are reported. PR will function until the day that the limit is surpassed and the system comes to a screeching halt. Perhaps Sage will give a grace period of X number of days in which to get new keys generated. I am sure the updates will not install unless the new keys are present. Sooooo, here is hoping that the key generator is much improved over the one that has been in use for the past 10 years. No matter what, the transition will not be smooth and the reseller will be caught in the cross fire.
