Client got a notice from the IRS that her W3 SS taxable wages differed from her 941 SS taxable wages by about 40K.  She has run through comparing the details on the quarterly report for YTD 4th qtr 2020 vs the filed W2s and can't find a difference between any employees.

YIKES!  I thought those two would pull their info from the same files.  Anyone have an explanation for this?

Might it be related to COVID pay?

That was my first thought, but they apparently only had 13K of COVID pay and the diff is 44K.

It's the wages, not the withheld amount.  And the amount isn't enough to be a quarter.

My understanding is if there was a fica deferral and then the employee is terminated the deferral amount needs to be included in wages / w-2.

Done of that happened, either.  Can anyone confirm which files are used for W2s vs 941s ?

Old CPA habits die hard for me.  I highly recommend to my PR clients that they reconcile their 941's to the W-3/2 totals BEFORE they send in the W-2's.  Heads off gotcha emails like this.

Do the FEDS provide what quarterly numbers they used?  Perhaps they are missing a quarterly report?

Would it help to run a report showing wages by earnings code to see if a specific earnings code matches the OOB amount?
Then start digging into the tax rules?  Maybe a tax rule was changed mid year?
