  • 1.  VI GL Detail Transactions Export to Tab Delimited table

    Posted 03-07-2024 14:57

    Client's GL detail transaction posting table(S) have 36MM records.  Audit firm wants an export of 2023 transactions.  Excel not big enough so am trying VI export.  This is the second time it has failed with full disk message.  Now trying to pull three months.

    Please, no need to suggest SQL

    If three months doesn't work, I will whip out Access unless someone is in the know about this error.

    I'd go with SQL Express (free!), but an ODBC query tool might work too...

    Look at where Sage is storing the VI Job logs.  (The Activity log should point you to the correct path).

    I remember seeing one import where the log file was about 1GB per run... which is just insane.

    Copy the company to backup company then run the Purge general Ledger History utility to remove everything prior to 2023.

    Sorry, did I mention that a SQL (express or otherwise) solution was not in the works?

    Sorry @Doug Higgs, while interesting, nonstarter.

    @Wayne Schulz - Possibly.

    @Kevin Moyes - I think you are on to something.  The log file has an M4T extension.  I now suspect that Sage is not creating overflow files properly.  Will wait for the quarterly to run

    "Sorry, did I mention that a SQL (express or otherwise) solution was not in the works?"

    The screen shot was not SQL Express.  SqlDbx is a stand alone query tool, that works using ODBC.  I've only started to look at it and don't know what kind of ability it has to handle large data sets.

    I would still use Excel (MS Query or Power Query) and just break it into smaller chunks via filtering - 6 months, 3 months,  or whatever portion fits on one worksheet. Some exports still use XLS format which I believe has a 65K line limit.
