v2023 ADV Customer Import

  • 1.  v2023 ADV Customer Import

    Posted 08-01-2024 08:28

Client has 25K customer records.  They are going live with Avalara today.  As part of the switch. I am importing AVATAX into the customer record.  Division, number, tax schedule.  I am concerned about the import speed.  The import is processing about 1K records per hour.  IMHO, I think that very slow.  What do others think?

Only five more hours to go.

It may be verifying the address or something similar requiring an API call on each record import.  I would try temporarily disabling Avatax and see if the import speed improves.

Good Luck. Also, do not forget about importing "Avatax" Tax Schedule to the Ship to Address Table.

If you have any custom office scripts on the customer master table, you may want to turn them off for the import.

    Thanks.

@Doug Higgs - Avalara link had not been activated prior to the VI start.  I did have to enable it in order for the Open SO import to work.

@Michael Davis - I did import the Ship to records as well.  Slow, but did not have 25K records.  In retrospect, perhaps the Global field update utility would have been a better choice.  But there were 20 existing tax schedules.  The from records appear to be an exact match so I ruled that out.

If API is active and is phoning home to the Avalara  mothership, I hope this does not count against their transaction count......

"...I hope this does not count against their transaction count......"  25K records.  Should only increase the annual Avalara fee by $20K - $25K... I'm sure the customer won't mind.

    SURPRISE ...

PS - I think that there's an option in the Avalara configuration to disable Avalara for VI imports.

Yes there is an AVATAX utility.  Library Master, Setup, AVATAX Tax Schedule Update.

Can you use the AR Global Customer Field change? You may have to use VI on the ship-to addresses. I thought there might have been an Avalara utility that did this but I don't have any active Avalara users to verify this.

And I'm sure you've seen the chatter on Avalara - I believe that no matter if the customer is paying tax or not - once you have the AVATAX in the record and it's used during SO then you're being charged the transaction fee. One common complaint - at least from my customer - is that there are xx,xxx customers and only yyy are taxable. Yet Avalara advised they pull in AVATAX as the tax schedule to all xx,xxx which resulted in every transaction running through Avalara even those where a customer was exempt or non-taxable. Certainly this is the proper way to setup Avalara however I've seen where customers don't understand that whenever AVATAX is the sales tax schedule that transaction is chargeable no matter if there is tax computed or not.

    Dang - Hast makes waste!!!!

Didn't even notice the Avalara tax utility.  Only 3K records left.  I would almost stop the import if I knew this would be super fast......

Well, I did stop the import and ran the utility.  I had 2K records to process.  In a blink of an eye, there fields were changed.

Avalara is a GREAT software................................  Ha Ha.
