v2015 premium. There are some inventory items on sales orders that have the Cost field available for editing. Most other items are grayed out. Under what conditions is an item cost field on a sales order available for changing?

Drop ships? The costs don't post but it gets written to invoice history.

Non-stock items. (Obvious I know but worth repeating.)

    Miscellaneous items, different valuation methods?

All great answers. The items are regular items and ARE drop ship items. Thanks! Interesting that clicking the drop ship box allows the cost to be changed. This user has PO so I would have thought one would be required to enter a PO number that the cost would be read from.

Depending on your settings in PO generation from SO, that cost can be what the PO uses. Useful when the salesperson gets the vendor quotes and then quotes the customer.

@PhilMcIntosh Yes, that is what is happening. using PO generation from SO. That is why I wonder why we can change the cost once it has populated the SO. Seems like an internal control weakness.

@PhilMcIntosh what setting moves the SO line ""cost"" to the PO? In my tests, it uses Item Last Cost. (I must have missed something). @DougHiggs huge whole in the process. The SO Line Cost can be changed independent of the Purchase Order. And the SO Line is not updated with a refreshed PO Unit Cost if the PO cost changes. If Sales Reps are paid on Gross Profit, that is a great way to 'boost' their income. :)

The actual invoice cost is still determined in the same way it always is as the invoice is posted. The SO line cost has no bearing on that, so changing it after PO creation will not affect the commission margin. See attached image for settings.

Good to know @PhilMcIntosh I was thinking about the Generate PO button on SO Entry, where you don't get these options to set the Unit Cost. On a Drop Ship, the Unit Cost is ""what every you have typed"" into the SO Line as the unit cost. Even if you set the Drop Ship Line Item Unit Cost to $ 0.00; that is how it posts when you invoice that line of the order; it does not use the PO Unit Cost, it does not use the item ""last cost"".

Entering a cost for commission items DOES affect the commission reporting. I had a customer who insisted all drop ship/miscellaneous/what-have-you items have a cost entered so his reports would include the costs.

@PhilMcIntosh If there is no costs specified in item maintenance, and the SO isn't linked to a PO, and item is a drop ship, then the cost specified on the sales order is used by the invoice. Big Issue.

@ThereseLogeais But it does print on the gross profit report prior to updating the sales journal. More importantly it does impact the salesperson commission report.
