V-Technology - Must be at 24.0.2 prior to June 1 to use UPS API and by Aug. 2024 for FedEx API

Is anyone else bothered by V-Technology sending such short notice to clients that they "must" be on 24.0.2 prior to June 1st to continue use with UPS and by August 2024 for FedEx for OAuth 2.0 communication?  Upgrading, sure no problem.  But they no longer support the "on premise desktop client" and all "on premise" users need to move to the Web Client?  I'm kind of bothered by this.

Subject: Important Changes for StarShip - June 1st Deadline

    Hi CUSTOMER NAME:

You may have already received notification from UPS that by June 2024, you will no longer be able to transact with UPS APIs using an access key for authentication.  At that time, you will be required to update your security model to OAuth 2.0.  FedEx will be following this process as well come August 2024.

Because you are running on an old Desktop application of StarShip, you will be unable to receive updates and fixes, and therefore will no longer be compliant when these changes go into effect.

As a result of the new requirements by the carriers,  you must migrate to our StarShip Cloud platform or upgrade to the latest version 24.0.2 and migrate to the Web Client On Premise application to be compliant with OAuth requirements.

Here are some of the many advantages of our Cloud solution that could benefit you.

      1. Unlimited Users
      2. All Parcel and LTL Carriers StarShip Supports
      3. Automatic Upgrades
      4. Save 15% or More on Annual Renewals
      5. Accessibility Anywhere in World
      6. Reduced IT Expenses
      7. Much More

As a valued customer, we appreciate your business and wanted to provide you with a special promotion if you decide to move forward with our Cloud solution by 4/30/24.  Come find out how you can earn up to 25% off PLUS 2 FREE Months on your 1st year.

Please feel free to reach out and schedule a 30 minute call to discuss your options using the link below my signature.   I look forward to speaking with you here soon.

I have a customer who recently ( within the prior month ) had V-Technologies install an upgrade to their on-prem. Is there a separate place that says they won't support on-prem?  I'm pretty sure V-Tech installed 24.0.2 and also the Web Client on-premise.

I do recall rumblings that V-Technologies was stopping support for on-prem StarShip but thought that had been delayed?

I have heard nothing about ending completely on-premise installs.  I have two clients that are going to struggle with the Web-Client (on premise has to use it); or if they decide to go StarShip Cloud (which uses it).  They will struggle with the changes.

Here's a cross-reference to an earlier (12/8/2023) 90 Minds thread about Starship Cloud.

I also had ChatGPT summarize it to add background to this topic

    • Kenny Daniel (TechnoClarity, Inc.) is considering transitioning his customer's setup from Sage100 to Starship Cloud. He is seeking insights from other consultants who have experience with this migration, asking for any do's, don'ts, and suggestions.

    • Dana Young (Lehman Wesley & Associates) advises waiting for the release of a new migration tool expected in the first or second quarter of 2024 before moving to the cloud. She details the current challenges and considerations:

      • Manual Setup: Currently, there's no tool available, so all setups have to be manually recreated in the cloud, which she describes as a huge hassle.
      • Cost Considerations: The cloud version operates on a subscription basis and is more expensive than the on-premise version.
      • Customer Reluctance: Many of her clients prefer to delay migration until it becomes absolutely necessary, such as when their current version is no longer supported, or the cost difference is minimized.
    • Wayne Schulz (Schulz Consulting) appreciates the shared feedback and expresses a wish for a regular platform like 90 Minds to share such insider-type information.

    • Kenny Daniel thanks Dana for her detailed information, indicating that he believes his customer will prefer to wait based on her insights.

    • Bill Pfahnl (Nims & Associates) highlights a hybrid option that allows customers to get accustomed to the cloud interface while keeping the on-premise server active. He notes that:

      • No Additional Cost: The hybrid option does not incur additional fees.
      • Dual Client Availability: Both the old on-premise and the new cloud-based clients can operate on the same workstation.
      • Future Migration: Recommends waiting for the new migration tool for a full transition to the cloud subscription model.

I think V-Technologies installed the hybrid for my customer. I'm unsure if they forced them to use the cloud UI, though. They mentioned that it would be needed soon, so they installed it. The V-Technologies tech also brought down my customer's Sage 100 by advising them that they could have people working in Sage during the V-Tech upgrade. Naturally, this upgrade crashed and took out a key data dictionary file. Luckily, we found a backup, but I am also wary of V-Technologies.

After V-Technologies performed their on-prem upgrade, the customer didn't have any issues-at least none I've heard about yet.

The V-Technologies tech was super rushed. It should be interesting to see how things roll as V-Technologies pushes further with their cloud product.

I saved some info from my last V-Technologies upgrade, which includes a project plan and proposal.

I'm not super-impressed by their project plan, which didn't mention the version that the customer was upgrading to and was nearly 100% boilerplate. The important takeaway is that V-Tech doesn't offer upgrades or upgrade assistance as a support case anymore. You have to engage with their upgrade team.

Many people do these upgrades themselves, but I started having V-Technologies do them about five years ago. I am not sure whether V-Tech will help during a self-upgrade as a support case or if they'll require you to create a project for their upgrade team.

I saved a copy of recent proposal/project plan as well as v24 files in our 90 Minds library:

@Wayne Schulz we are scrambling to upgrade all our "on premise clients" to 24.0.3 before June 1st then again to v24.0.4 before August 1st to handle UPS/FedEx OAuth requirements.

Honestly, the quotes they have been giving our clients for this upgrade is "ridiculous".  One of our clients was quoted "Cloud/Professional" pricing which will take them from paying On Premise annual fees of $4,700 for the 2024 renewal (2023 renewal was $3812) to paying annual fees of $10,608 for Cloud PLUS their $ 3600 on board fee.  And if they were to sign today for Cloud, they STILL have to go to those versions in their on premise version before June 1.  Their fee to have V-Technology do the upgrade was also a crazy fee of $ 3800 for the By June1 part and additional $ 2800 for the by Aug. part.

I had almost the same conversation. When I questioned why the customer had just paid $600 (ish) for an upgrade in February 2024 and now the ask was $3,600, I got a "well, we were undercharging."

Ultimately, V-Tech said they'd send the 24.0x along with instructions, and the customer could probably update on-prem by following the directions.

In conversation, V-Technologies mentioned $3.600 to get to 24.02 and another $3k ( ish ) when the next on-prem update was available.

It was, IMO,  a really bad experience. V-Technologies seemed way behind,, and they even admitted that professional services were booked up through May ( maybe June now ).

I'm hoping to follow the same plan as you. I don't think these smaller .xx releases are as big a deal to install as the full version and/or jump to cloud.

I left the meeting shaking my head

We had a client pay the fees to move to StarShip Cloud.  One of the so-called advantages was that upgrades happen automatically.  This has quickly turned into a nightmare since StarShip Cloud rolled out an upgrade on Thursday night which broke StarShip Link for Sage 100.  Per StarShip, StarShip Link only broke for a limited number of customers but ours happens to be one.  There is no roll back plan, no backup to restore and no timeline for a fix.  Customer hasn't been able to ship 100+ orders per day since Thursday night.  StarShip states that the BOI interface works but that the BOI interface does not work with MAPADOC.  Of course, the client has MAPADOC.  ugh!

Does anyone else feel like V-Technologies underestimated the difficulty of migrating customers from on-premise software to Starship Cloud? It seems like they focused heavily on developing Starship Cloud, and now they're scrambling to get existing customers on board.

I think UPS announced this OAuth 2.0 requirement well before now. It seems like they mentioned it at least a year ago. It's unlikely that UPS would suddenly put everyone in a difficult position by making many shipping packages non-compliant in June 2024 without ample warning. ( Source: UPS Site )

V-Technologies might want to reconsider highlighting their past warnings about this transition. Sending notices in March or April 2024 for a June deadline, along with costly service and cloud subscription quotes, puts significant pressure on their customers.

This is a terrible situation from my vantage point.

We are scrambling, too, and I have some additional information, as I'm learning along with you.  I don't have access to the Google docs project plan link, so not sure if this information is in there. If I can get access or someone can send it to me, I'd appreciate that.

From what I understand (and I asked Abel at VTech), the on prem client will still work, even if the customer is using the Starship Link.  Then, when they can, the shippers can explore, or we can train them on, the web client.

After you load the new system (both the on prem and web client), you need to let StarShip know so they can turn on the OAuth for UPS on their end and then we need to do something with the registry on the client's server.

KBA regarding Regkey for UPS OAuth and our help guide to setup in Web UI.

    https://aptean2.force.com/support/s/article/Switch-to-UPS-OAuth-2-0-instructions" rel="noopener">https://aptean2.force.com/support/s/article/Switch-to-UPS-OAuth-2-0-instructions

    https://ask.vtechnologies.com/kb/ups-oauth-account-setup/" rel="noopener">https://ask.vtechnologies.com/kb/ups-oauth-account-setup/

I put my NFR copy upgrade yesterday.  I haven't yet followed the instructions above for my installation to move to OAuth and UPS is failing.  Not surprising.  Fed Ex is OK.

Version 24.0.3 came out late last week.

Fyi re: 24.0.3, this just came across my desk (orig from Simon at VTech):

We ran into an issue with a group of Sage 100 Link users who upgraded to v.24.0.3 and our Dev team has been working on a fix the last few days so we are asking customers to install v.24.0.2 for now since that works just fine and the users can authenticate their UPS accounts still on that version.

I've been reaching out to Sage 100 customers I know who use Starship, and so far, at least two of them say they have not received any notice from V-Technologies. I'm not sure whether this will snowball or be a faux issue, much like Sage OAUTH/Paperless.

I'm at least letting the customer know of the potential issue so that I'm not blamed.

Brett--I can vouch that the .3 version is broken...

A big concern is our customers is being down while waiting for StarShip to update their side.  I asked StarShip how far in advance can we let them know we're going to upgrade our client, and their response was this:

"The day before up to right before you run the installer. Once we flag the license on our end, things will remain the same client-side until the StarShip server checks for updates, which occurs automatically every 24 hours or when the StarShip Core Service is started like during an update."

For me, I'm going to let them know the morning of the upgrade for each customer after I've confirmed with the customer, many whom have chosen to have this upgrade done in the afternoon.

For "belts and suspenders," I'm also asking customers to give me (or be available to type) the UPS profile name and password and provide me with a recent UPS invoice, in case we have to reauthorize UPS (like I needed to do because I put up the .3 version in my NFR copy.)

I did two upgrades to 24.0.2 in the last week.  I have the same issue with both of them.  The desktop client works fine so that is the good part.  The web client is getting an error.  the connector is running and works fine.  I signed up for access to the support portal last Friday but haven;t received my credentials to the support portal yet.  When you register for credential it says it may take up to 24 hours to get access.  Well it's been 5 days now.  Wonderful.  Below and attached is the same error I am getting in the web UI on both of the upgrades I did:

Thanks Wayne!  That's it.  For documentation:

    1. On the top menu bar click Setup
    2. Click the three horizontal bars in the upper left corner.
    3. Setup Home
    4. Setup Your Source Interfaces
    5. Click the pencil to the right of the appropriate interface.  ie "Sage 100 2022 StarShip Link"
    6. Select a Connector - click the triangle on the right to list the connectors.

I'm doing my third one today.

First, if you need to enter a recent invoice to reconnect to UPS, you must enter the information from the LAST UPS invoice, even though the system says one from the prior three months.

Second, if here are issues with the connector, try restarting both the Core service and the StarShip Connector.

Third, V-Tech told us to install the StarShip connector as a desktop application, not as a service (there is a choice when you load it).

@Roberta Chase  I have the web client working now per @Wayne Schulz instructions.  Also, I entered the most recent UPS invoice information into the StarShip web UI.  How would I know if that's all that needs to be done to activate UPS so it works on June 1?  The UPS account indicates enabled in the web UI even before entering the most recent invoice information.

@Wayne Schulz   I sent an email to Matt St John at StarShip.  He mentioned that for the UPS account, the Web UI version will show that the UPS account is active because it's picking up the activation when it was done through the Desktop client. HOWEVER, you will still need to re-activate the UPS account through the Web UI version.  Did you do this for your customers and if so how did you do it?  I know how to get to Setup>carrier Interfaces>UPS.  Then what?

Sorry, I've been out of office and now doing upgrade.

Doug-After you choose UPS, you choose the Accounts "button"

You enter your profile name and password and then I believe there is Activate button or Authorize or OAuh button (I forget the name), which will activate this in UPS and you'll see dots for the activation

Then, at the bottom of the screen, there will be an accept (I think that is the name) and you accept.

I can update this with pictures soon, since that is where I am.

This is the message that went out to StarShip Users Today.  From my understanding, if you are using a UPS Invoice to authenticate; you are not OAuth Ready.

    Next Steps

    1. Upgrade to 24.0.3 (Server & Client) <u6:p></u6:p>
      1. You will need to Install the StarShip Web Client even if using legacy desktop
      <u6:p></u6:p>
    2. Contact us to let us know when the upgrade is complete so we can enable the OAuth flag on your license
    3. <u6:p></u6:p>
    4. Follow the steps for how to authenticate your UPS account by reviewing the UPS OAuth Help - this must be done via the Web Client

I am waiting for confirmation as to how they turn on this feature in StarShip.  Is it a License and we start by refreshing the licenses from within StarShip Server (like when adding a new carrier)?  If they turn it on, does it break UPS until the steps above are completed?  I am impressing upon my clients they "MUST" know their UPS.com User ID and Login for "each" UPS Account they have, before we will even start the process.

OK, Simon confirmed this is what has to happen.

    Next Steps

    1. Upgrade to 24.0.3 (Server & Client)
      1. <u6:p></u6:p>You will need to Install the StarShip Web Client even if using legacy desktop
    2. Contact us to let us know when the upgrade is complete so we can enable the OAuth flag on your license
    3. Go into the Server and press REGISTRATION Update and Immediately do the UPS.com Authentication.
      1. Otherwise, it will auto update over night, and you can't ship UPS unless you have also done the Web Portion.
    4. Follow the steps for how to authenticate your UPS account by reviewing the UPS OAuth Help - this must be done via the Web Client

Remember also to modify the registry.

I request the OAuth change with Starship.

When they tell me it's done,   I do my registry entry

                  1. StarShip Support must enable UPS OAuth flag on the customer's license.

    2. Open Registry Editor app. Then follow path below.

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\V-Technologies\StarShip

    SQL\Server

    3. In the Server folder Right Click> New> String Value.

    4. Name it: "UPSOAuth" Capitaliza􀀂on does ma􀀄er for the name.

    5. Right Click on UPSOAuth > Modify.

    6. Enter Value Data is 'Y'.

Then I do the registration with Starship Manager

Thanks @Madeline Stefanou and @Roberta Chase  Are there any timing concerns for enabling OAuth?  For example, the customer is using the desktop client during the day.  Can the OAuth authorization be made by V-Technologies without affecting the desktop clients?  Certainly don't want any issues if OAuth gets enabled but the UPS account hasn't been registered yet through the web UI.

Simon at V-Technology told me if they turn it on, nothing happens "until" you go into StarShip Server and refresh the registration; or Over Night, StarShip Auto refreshes the registration. I'm planning to do these OAuth at end of day when UPS Shipment has finished, by having V-Tech turn it on then use Server to refresh keys.  Or do it in the morning after V-Tech turns it on; before any UPS Shipments. Caroline Rua <crua@vtechnologies.com> Can turn that on in V-Tech by emailing her with the client name and serial number info.

I contacted Caroline Rua at V-Technologies.  She will turn on OAuth when two conditions have been met: The web client is installed, and you have the customer's UPS login credentials and there is a UPS account added to the customer's profile.  In order words, you need to get the customer's UPS.com user name and password.  If the customer doesn't have a UPS account profile, then you need to ask them to create one.

Add this to the 'We need to figure this crap out within the next two weeks" list.  I couldn't follow the V-Tech screen shots and finally found out the customer has a "CampusShip" account.  CampusShip User IDs are not supported with the APIs.  UPS advises creating a new User ID and linking it to the existing account number.  Another option is contacting the Account Executive to request they unenroll the ID from CampusShip in this scenario.  I'm not going there.

This is unofficial right now, but I got this from Caroline Rua from V-Tech this morning:

We did get an extension from UPS Ready Team so you do have a little more time.  We will be sending out update on this with date set at 6/30 so we give ourselves a little buffer.

I'm keeping with my upgrade schedule and hopefully the last client will be upgraded next Wednesday evening.

    Important UPS Extension

    Hello!

As you are aware, UPS API security is migrating from access keys to OAuth starting on June 3, 2024. As a UPS Community Developer, we have worked with the UPS Ready® team to get an extension of an additional 4 weeks (until June 30, 2024) to finalize the migration.  This is reassurance that UPS shipping will not be impacted on the June 3rd deadline.  We thank you for your patience during this OAuth migration.  If you have any concerns, please contact us or your respective UPS Account Executive.

Thanks to those who have already upgraded.  If you have not yet upgraded, we encourage you to do so as early as possible.  Please see below for next steps and some updated Q&A.

    Next Steps

    • Upgrade to 24.0.3 (Server & Client)
      • Server
      • Web Client
      • Desktop Client (if applicable)  Desktop users will need to install the Web Client to run the authentication step.
    • Contact us to let us know when the upgrade is complete so we can enable the OAuth flag on your license
    • Follow the steps for how to authenticate your UPS account by reviewing the UPS OAuth Help - this must be done via the Web Client

    FAQs

What if I'm using the desktop client?

You will need to install the web client to perform the handshake and then you can go back to the legacy desktop to ship.

Will I be forced to authenticate immediately after the upgrade?

No, we will enable this on your license after you contact us and then you can continue with the handshake.

After I upgrade, what other prereq should I be aware of?

You will need a ups.com profile WITH your UPS account tied to it.

Steps to create a new UPS account and register to a UPS.com profile.

    1. Click on this link to create a new UPS account if you do not already have one.
    2. Once account is created and you are signed in, select "Accounts and Payment".
    3. From the "Add a Payment Method" dropdown, select "Add Existing Account" and it will request that you add your "UPS Account Number", nickname, and postal code.
    4. You will need either Invoice Data or a PIN to verify your account. This should have been sent to the original email address used at account creation.
    5. Once UPS successfully validates your Invoice Data or PIN, the registration process on UPS.com is now complete.

How should I notify you that I've completed my upgrade and have my ups.com profile?
Reply to this email and we will let you know when it has been enabled.

I'm running desktop and installing the Web Client for the authentication, do I need to install the Connector, Dashboard, etc.?

No, only the Web Client is needed for the authentication handshake.

Adding More Information here for everyone:
the UPS.com user ID and Login "MUST" have access to the area shown in this image as "Accounts and Payments".  If you log into UPS.com and do not see that feature to review Accounts and Payments, you do not have User ID and Login Credentials that will support doing the "OAuth" function.

This has been a headache for everyone.  Last week, they moved the drop dead date from June 1 to June 30.

    A few other tidbits:

You don't have to use the new web connector interface.  You DO need to install the new connector and set it up, but then your users can go back to the desktop icon/interface, for now.  Users have been pretty positive about the new look with a little training and relating the old system tabs to the new screen "areas."

TForce, if your customer is using it, needs it's own separate authorization, which I'm muddling thru:  https://ask.vtechnologies.com/kb/tforce-freight-setup/

Check your customer's expiration date for Starship.  Starship had some turnover with the persons who were sending out the notices, so for about 6 months, renewal notices weren't being emailed.  You'll find out when you go to upgrade and the system lets you know they have expired.  Embarrassing scramble.

Lastly, even IF your customer has everything set up and you can see everything you need in the profile as Madeline pointed out (not just see the profile, but go into it and see the accounts set up), and you get a "Missing or invalid Shipper number (Code120100)" there is a KB article for the work around.  It involves turning on the logs and tracking in Service Manager, doing a transaction in Starship, then looking at one of the logs-internet traffic.  You'll find a user ID and a password in the internet traffic log, where the UserID starts with the UPS account (in my example 2615xxx) <UserId>2615xxx716033930</UserId><Password>d2fddcfa-b</  .  You'll use this user ID and password to authenticate.  If you have 8 UPS accounts, you'll need to do it all 8 times.

I've done all my upgrades and not one has gone 100% smoothly.  I still have a few open issues.

I suggest reviewing the VTechnologies knowledge site - https://vtechnologies.my.site.com/support/s/knowledge for the latest technology articles. I am convinced  StarShip upgrades are 90% simple and 10% problems. The concern is that the 10% is frequently not well documented and you can only get around an error by submitting a support ticket to V-Technologies

Please keep sharing your V-Technologies issues and especially what the resolution to the issue was.

There is also a new document on the V-Technologies site that lists from Frequently Asked Questions about UPS and OAUTH
