  • 1.  Upgrading O/S on server and workstations - is a reinstall necessary?

    Posted 09-13-2019 16:59
Client is on 2017 Standard and will be upgrading to v2019 shortly.  He is planning to update the workstations from Win 7 to 10.  Not sure which O/S he plans on upgrading server to, but he's planning an in-place O/S upgrade on the existing Sage server.  Assuming the server O/S is supported for 2017, I believe 2017 programs will need to be re-installed (and PU).  Is that right?  Will Sage workstations need to be uninstalled/reinstalled?

You shouldn't have to reinstall programs after an OS upgrade - HOWEVER, upgrading an OS in place is not the best way.  Wiping C: and installing the new OS is better.  This means all the apps have to be reinstalled, and if the server has Sage and/or Paperless on the C: drive it will need to be copied over somewhere and copied back.  Non-OS apps on a server should be installed on D:, but especially with the rise of virtualization a lot of IT people get sloppy about this, even though it makes life much easier for OS upgrades, or for OS reinstalls due to a corrupted OS.

Two thumbs up with @Phil McIntosh regarding server upgrade warning!  A server is not a prime spot for an in place OS upgrade.  Does a company really want to risk a screwed up upgrade???  Do you want to waste your time troubleshooting Sage only to tie it back to the upgrade?  Not worth it.
