Upgrade steps for a 3.61 Site?

  • 1.  Upgrade steps for a 3.61 Site?

    Posted 12-18-2019 12:36
Does anyone have a set of mandatory upgrade steps for a 3.61 to 2019?

So far I believe it is:

    3.71
    4.3 ( last version for level 3 migration )
2017 ( sage bills this as must be at least 4.5 PU 8 but I think 2017 works - I think this is largely due to payroll at framework in 2018 )
    CURRENT

Certain enhancements may require an interim stop so the above is just for unmodified MAS 90

    Did I miss anything?

Had one of these earlier this year.

    I did:  3.60>4.5>2016>2018

Edit: I should add we didn't migrate the 3.x, dropped the company data files in 4.5 and just converted.

This came from an exhaustive project to migrate a 3.70. When migrated, there no items showing in ALE in Inventory, or scrolling through Inventory Maintenance/Inquiry.

Credit goes to @Carmen Cruz for finally figuring out the path!

    Awww thank you Eric  :)
Wayne,  Sage says you have to go to 3.61 to 3.71.  However the most important thing was that the user is a least on 3.6.  Reason being is in 3.6 there were major table changes done which would cause issues during conversion.  As long as they don't have major MODs in the system I would do 3.6 to 4.5 to 2016 to 2019

What files did you copy for the 3.6 to 4.5? Did you just create the company ( blank ) in 4.5 then copy in the individual data folders? I had thought there was a need to stop at 3.71 ( perhaps related to inventory ) although the documentation from Sage on this is non-existent ( which is why I think it would be good to document while we all can remember the steps ).

LOL  @ Rhonda and she is right

    Step one.... lol
    1. Create the MAS_XXX directory in 4.5 MAS90 structure
    2. Copy in from 3.6 MAS90  all 5 digit folders that  end with the XXX just created in 4.5 structure
    3. Go to Company Maintenance in 4.5
    4. Create XXX company code
    5. Click on Activate
    6. This will make Sage look in the MAS_XXX folder and it will respond with the "The data must be converted..... blah blah message"
    7. Click Ok
    8. The grid at the bottom should now show all the modules you brought in with a status of 3.61
    9. If they say 0.00 like Fixed Assets remove that folder from your MAS_XXX as it is not being used to begin with
    10. Now refresh Company Maintenance so any items like that will disappear by clicking on the Activate button again to reset
    11. Now your ready to convert the data

Be sure they had no fancy MODS in 3.61 that would be missing in 4.5.

Is 4.5 PU 8 the latest release level you can go directly from 3.6? Do you know why that would be so?

Also, you mention 4.5 to 2016 then to 2019 - any specific reason why 2016?

    TIA

Yes PU8 is the last release but because your not going directly to 2018 you don't have to be on that exact level. As for jumping to 2016, mostly because that is where I stop but if you want to go 4.5 to 2017 then 2019 you could definitely do that too. :)

    Wayne.
Mandatory order of upgrade by Sage rules

    • 3.2
    • 3.41
    • 3.61
    • 3.71
    • 4.5.8
      • Or
    • 2013 or higher up to 2017  (you are correct this is due to Payroll)
    • 20x version to 2019

Also be advised Crystal Reports 2016 is not a mandatory program as of yet.  You can still use Crystal Reports 2011 for Sage 2018 and 2019 and it will get called when clicking on Designer or Maintain buttons in Sage.

@Carmen Cruz Can you elaborate a bit on Crystal 2016 not being required? How can we install 2018/2019 without it?

The actual Crystal program, not the runtime that gets installed.  I have a lot of clients running 2019 but still the old version of Crystal if they had Crystal on their local machines.

    Hi Michelle,
What Beth said in regards to me referring to installing the actual program. :)

This is very useful especially if you have multiple versions installed on the same server.   With Crystal 2016 it makes a mess with the program changes.

However, I don't know how many of you know, for Sage 100 2019 the fix for the Crystal COM error that occurs due to 2 versions being on the server will sometimes not be resolved by coping the PVXWIN32.exe.config file from Sage 100 2019 to lower level version client is still in.  What will occur is the server will be able to print but your users will not be able too.  They will get an Error 200 in swcocx line 130.  Ancient error message.  Resolution from back then is not the fix.  It is fighting with the config file  Sage Knowledgebase has an article where you can get a link to that file that will allow printing both directions as it does with Sage 100 2018.

The 2018 version of the pvxwin32.exe.config should be copied to the old version home folder, not the 2019 version of that file to repair the crystal conflict.  They are not the same.

I recently upgraded a 3.5 and went to 3.71 first. I created a VM to do this and had to load Server 2003. Anything later would not upgrade.

Sorry for re-activating this older thread. I know at some point someone may search it and wanted to document what worked in my situation.

No third-party enhancements - this is probably an important item to note because these steps might change if there are 3rd parties that require a different version to convert from.

If you have third-party solutions AND are migrating from a really old version such as 3.6x then you should treat the initial test migration as a separate project because I wouldn't be surprised if every third-party was a little different in how difficult/easy it was to move from version to version. You'll also likely have to beg/locate copies of the older integrations which could be harder than finding the older vanilla Sage install disks.

    • The customer started at 3.6
    • For some reason, I installed 3.71 over 3.6 ( I can't remember the reason but may have had issue migrating directly from 3.6 )
    • From 3.71 I went 4.3 ( I think this is the last version with "convert level 3 data" available
    • From here I went to 2017 ( I might have been able to go higher but when I tried to migrate directly to 2020 it gave me a "must be on 4.5 PU8" which 2017 did not ) - to be on the safe side you may have to go to 4.5 PU8 and then 2017.
    • From 2017 I went to 2020

For each of these steps, I followed the standard Sage steps to migrate and convert. I think you can probably shortcut some steps by copying the files directly to company MAS_XXX folders as Carmen outlines in her notes within this thread.
