Unable to Open an .xlxs Memo Attachment

v2019 Windows 10 build 1809 or newer 1809 or 1903.  Customer, vendor, item maintenance,  Create a memo and add an Excel .xlsx attachment.  Save the memo then open the memo and double click on the attachment.  It won't open.  I brought this issue to Sage's attention in January and was assured it would be fixed in version 2019.  I don't even see a KB on the issue now. Can anyone else replicate this and if so does anyone have a solution other than saving files as .xls?  The customer is throwing a fit because they use a lot of complicated formulas in the attachments and apparently need the .xlsx format for attachments.

Yes, this is an issue with Windows 10. I know it is an issue with 1903, but was not aware that it was an issue with 1809.

Thank you @John Leonard  Did you open a case with Sage about this issue?   This is an important and urgent issue.  Windows 7 isn't supported in less than three months.   All of the current Windows 10 builds  are 1809 or newer.  Most people are using Office 365 or a version of Excel that uses xlxs extensions.  If the users can attach a file but cannot open it this is a big problema.  It also affects third party enhancements.

Doug, I believe it is an issue with Windows and not a Sage issue per se and something that Microsoft needs to fix.

    I don't have this issue on Windows 10 (1809) Sage 100cloud Standard 2019 (Version 6.10.0) loading a memo-ed  xlsx in Customer Maintenance.

I assume you mean .xlsx. I use Office 365 and there's no such thing as an .xlxs extension.

@Dan Burleson. Yes I mean .xlsx.  Very interesting you aren't receiving the error.  I have verified it on several of my customer's Win 10 1809 and 1903 builds as well as my laptop that has Win 10 1809.  I have 6.1.1 Standard on my laptop.  My customer has 6.1.1 Premium.  I wish I could determine the difference between your configuration and mine.

@Dan Burleson  I am not clear what you mean by "loading a memo".  I can attach the file to the memo with no error.  The issue is later opening the memo, then double-clicking on the attached file.  The file should open but it does not.  I've spent several hours chasing down potential causes.. ie default file extension associations, disabling com add-ins like SI, etc.

Sorry, but I was using "memo-ed" as a verb. I had no problem loading a ".xlsx" using the Customer Maintenance Memo View Attachment button with 2019 Std and I also tried this on 2019 Premium Workstation at level 1903 as shown in the linked video below:

That is interesting. I wonder if it has something with the version of Excel?

Hmmm.. I don't know what the difference could be.  I am now waiting for Sage to help me resolve this.  I see this issue was reported on Sage City 2 years ago and there was no solution offered.  I have re-created the issue on my laptop - Win 10 1809 Sage 100 v 2019.1 standard, Office / Excel 2016 on premise.  At the customer site the same issue with Sage 100 2017 or 2019.1 premium, Win 10 1809 and 1903, Office / Excel 365.

Because this is a failure with Exception Code 0xc0000005 in the pvxwin32.exe application- one of the Sage programs--and the msoshext.dll shared library used by the Sage program application.  The shared DLL is "Microsoft Office Shell Extension Handlers", which makes sense with the problems we're seeing.

0xc0000005 is a memory access violation--it's trying to read/write something it shouldn't.  I believe this usually means someone's using a bad pointer in the code.

@Dan Burleson  I think I am finally on the scent.  What is the file name you are trying to open?  I shortened my file name to test.xlsx and it worked.  Ten I tried test1234567890.xlsx and it failed.  test12345.xlsx also failed but test12.xlsx was successful.  I believe it has something to do with either the format or length of the file or the length of the path.

@Dan Burleson  The file / path length theory doesn't pan out.  It works once then after logging out of Sage 100 then logging back in, files that previously opened don't open.

    Success..... sort of...  from Sage:
"This issue is being investigated.  However, it is not something that can be tipped as the permanent fix will require changes to the interpreter.  The permanent fix will be included in the 2020 release.  There is a workaround for this issue which I have included below:

As a temporary workaround rename ..\MAS90\Home\xmllite.dll to \MAS90\Home\xmllite.old

*Caveat*  If the customer has development partner modifications that include the interpreter utilizing XML functionality renaming the file above will cause an error in the development partner functionality."

I tested this on my laptop and at the customer site and it works.  If it is advanced or premium then xmllite.dl in the local workstation home folder needed to be renamed as well as xmllite.dll in the home folder of the server.

    @Dan Burleson

The interpreter is hard coded to load this library from the home folder (MAS90\Home\xmllite.dll).  This version of xmllite.dll (shipping with Sage 100) is incompatible with current versions of Windows 10 and the Interpreter is incompatible with the current Windows version of the file (…\Windows\SysWOW64\ xmllite.dll)

A fix is planned for the 2020 release."
