It makes things more complicated if they redo their network infrastructure, but functionally using the IP address is fine. If that is on the horizon, try a HOSTS file edit to hard code it there, where the servername is resolved to IP without a DNS / WINS lookup.
If there is no domain / central authentication authority (PDC, or whatever the modern equivalent is), that could be an issue too. Credentials stored in a mapped drive do go to sleep, causing problems when that happens.

That usually has nothing to do with Sage. Either DNS (which you can bypass usually by using the IP address instead of server name), or actual network issues (loose cable, bad port on a network device...).
