Trying to modify the GL-BALANCE SHEET 1.RPT template. It saves my parameter field, but over writes my modified selection criteria. Any ideas?

WAD, WAD, WAD, working as designed. By design the Crystal run time engine will ignore any selection criteria you may add in the designer.

Instead of using the parameter in the selection, you might be able to use it to suppress fields/sections/groups/etc. or in formulas to get what you need.

Sometimes (like with forms) I can get the Select GROUP to work even if I can't get Select RECORD to work.
