This should be a fun one for a Friday afternoon. I've done SQL linked server to MAS several times in the past. Having trouble with a standard 4.5 installation and SQL 2005 Express. Does anyone know if that combination works and if so, what the secret to success might be?

@BrettLyder, it should. That used to be the standard for Biz Insights from Biz Net. Biz Insights has now moved to SQL 2008 Express (R2) as their standard but I don't understand why you are having trouble with 2005. (They only downside is the 1 GB database limit in 2005 vs 10 GB in 2008; and they are both free.)

I thought it should too. I just can't get it to connect. query runs forever.

Are you writing a simple select to pull one or two rows?

@ShawnSlavin I think i've made a bit of a break-through. This is an orphan that we picked up and didn't have anything to do with the original configuration. I changed the SQL service to use a specific netword account instead of local user and it seems to be working. Thanks for confirming that it should work!

Here is an excerpt from the Biz Insight Installation guide for MAS 90/200 Providex regarding Linked Servers. The manual is newer and references SQL 2008 R2 but hopefully, it might trigger a thought.
