This is a really interesting topic written by someone who left Microsoft for Google and then went back to Microsoft.
I have always said that all the free lunches , cooked by chefs and abundant ""make your own hours / work when you want"" will all dry up as soon as the growth starts to dry up.
And while Google is still doing very well - they've recently taken steps to stop investing in a lot of areas that don't make money.
In other words the era of wild growth for Google is over. So the chef hours are cut back. The stupid programs that produce no revenue are cut. Employees have to pay for child care just like us in the real world.
In short all rapidly growing companies eventually stop growing rapidly.
Even Apple will hit this phase of slowing / cautious growth.
