There is some truth to this and I was thinking the same thing.

I guess it depends what was infringing and how Samsung responds to fix the infringements. I have to guess Samsung was easily a year into fixing these issues or it would be quite ""RIM"" like for them to have ignored the possibility of losing. I think long term Google might be drawn into this fight to protect Android.

I think this is an example of the patent system being bat-shit crazy. One of the patents was the rectangular phone shape. Really? REEEEEAAAALLLY??? I guess the last season of the Office with the triangle shaped iPad like device was more on the money than anyone would have suspected. It's sheer lunacy. On a related note: do you notice how Firefox and Chrome don't have a ""Scroll Here"" option when you click in the scroll bar on the right? Guess why? If you said ""MS has a patent"", you win. So ... companies keep customers in the gutter by preventing other companies from including the most basic features in interfaces. Completely ridiculous. That would be like Ford getting a patent for having a dashboard with a speedometer and preventing other cars from doing the same. Stupid but that's where we are in the technology patent world these days.

Patent system is batshit crazy. Still, one of the jurors after judgement said that the Samsung internal memos that said ""copy Apple"" is what made it easy for them to convict. The jury declined to do a lot of what Apple wanted, too..
