    The ability to use iMessage on the desktop is going to be great for us Mac users... hopefully they'll make an iMessage for Windows (I'm betting that they will).

    Apple says that Lion users will be able to download a beta version of Messages starting Thursday. The final version will be available in Mountain Lion.

    whats so special versus live messenger or the other 50 instant message systems?

    Messages is potentially big for no other reason than iMessage is built into every iPhone sold. However the downside is that once you try to communicate with someone who does nto have iMessage it either goes through text which is often not so good if the other person is not on unlimited sms. Unfortunately due to each platform trying to create lock in -- it seems that SMS is going to be the lowest common denominator for messaging for some time to come.
