Task Scheduler

  • 1.  Task Scheduler

    Posted 09-16-2025 13:58

    2014.1 Premium.

Windows Task Scheduler shows these jobs completed.  Sage Task Scheduler log shows as completed.  However, Master Console shows the job has hung and is "Executing" and DFDM has to fix it.  Windows Task Manager has to kill the Task o release it.

Does this work for anyone?  Is this WAD?  Not recommended?

The Windows login used for the task needs a real print object as the default printer.  It cannot be a PDF printer, because that hangs the task with an invisible prompt for file location (auto-printed job log).

In earlier versions we did have problems with multiple tasks in the same job, and had to separate them into multiple schedules to avoid frozen tasks.

    Thanks Kevin.

They all use the same real network printer.

I will be separating the Tasks as well.

The printer I am talking about is not visible in Sage.  It is specifically the Windows profile's default printer, on that machine, which matters for the task log being auto-printed.

(The amount of frustration we've experienced over that detail is not small).

I gave up on this and would be interested if anyone was able to get it to work for any tasks that don't hang. My memory is I was trying to run the utility to clear the paid today or something similar and it hung sporadically making it more trouble than it was worth.

We are working a very similar problem with a client this week.  @Christine Kuhn may be able to share more information about the Printer Setup.  The HOST Service user account needed a defaulted physical printer.  Once we set that up; it stopped the sessions from hanging, even though nothing needs to physically print.

Have the jobs ever worked or is this the first time setting them up a Windows Task Scheduler Job?

Because those 4 journals update, separate those onto 4 different task scheduler runs 15 minutes apart and see if you have better luck.

Here is my list I compiled yesterday for Task Scheduler issues:

    • Sage Service user must be setup with a real printer and set as Default on Sage Server.
    • Sage Service user must be given  "Log on as a batch job" privileges in gpedit
    • In User Maintenance - Preferences tab verify that the Prompt for Company Code check box is unchecked for User setup to run job.
    • Company Key 000000001 must exist in ..\mas90\mas_system\sy_company.m4t
    • Check 'Run with Highest Privileges' in Windows Task Scheduler Job

    For emailing

    • For Sage 100 Advanced or Premium select option: "Use as Default Company for Server Settings"
    • Must have a Company Email entered in Company Maintenance Main Tab

As far as intermittent crashing goes for ongoing jobs that work, it would be nice if the whole thing didn't have to depend on a default printer working which it seems like it does.   I agree it is not totally reliable.

    Thanks Christine.

In a test production clone environment, I added the Sage Service User permission in gpedit.  I created the multi-task Task Scheduler job.  I did not have a Printer so I used Microsoft PDF.  I did not have a Company Code Key "0000000001" so I cloned one.

    The 2 sub-tasks completed successfully.

You really don't want to use the PDF print object.

Agreed.  Just reporting that it worked.  Will get IT to install a printer then change it.

FWIW, since setting up a printer (per @Kevin Moyes link above, there have been no reported issues with Windows/Sage Task scheduler,

I stumbled across this thread as a customer was calling me to ask if I could set up Sage Task Scheduler for them. I think this has some great information, and I compiled it into our content library. It would be awesome if anyone that has new information could supply that on this thread so I can update it. I feel like this is something that is not well covered in the Sage Knowledge Base and is great knowledge for us to capture as a group.

When you set this up for a client do you usually propose a project? This doesn't seem like it's technically difficult but that it likely requires some oversight to get it running correctly - possibly over a period of days or weeks.

in @Amber Prayfrock's MOTM's presentation she included notes on how to best handle the printer for Task Scheduler Tasks.

A print-to-text-file local print object can work.

Make sure DefaultCompanyKey in SY_System references a real company code.

I believe the tasks run in MAS90 mode, so don't set things up to rely on the service account permissions (for Advanced / Premium).

You can set up a task, then copy / paste the Windows Task Scheduler command into a batch file, if you want to trigger the task as part of a different process... (like run an import, then trigger a posting task).
