Tariffs

The first reseller who makes a nice SCRIPTED package for doing tariffs (including options to make it by item or by product line, using Misc Charge Codes that can be tied to an item/prod line, handles back orders, and of course has the ability to change the rate every 5 minutes) and offers it to end users for free will be an American hero.

Spoke with one of our resale clients on Monday and they're getting ready to add tariffs - they've got a boat on the water of 100K material that they've already paid for but looks like they'll have to cough up another 100K to get it.  Pretty sure that's a couple weeks of payroll, not sure what they will do (borrow, I guess). She told me one of her salespeople got chewed out royally by a customer when he told them they'd be passing along the tariffs - do people STILL think China's paying the GD things?  I can't imagine being a business owner right now who deals with imports.

China is still a go.. and it seems like 90% of the distributors OI deal with import from China. I think we need to put a tariff on our consulting fees for end users that import from China.

@Dan Burleson is a TRUE WIZARD at scripting add Ons based on the item line.  But I doubt if he is interested in being an American hero.  He is just too modest for that.  But he does strive to be like his "Uncle" Warren, so he will expect some greenbacks for his effort.  Did I say he was "damn" good?  And his solutions survive upgrades.

@Dan Burleson currently has one partially written for one of my clients. I'm just waiting for the client to finalize the design. We'll either have a UDT with the product line code and rate or a UDF on CI_Item so every item could have its own rate. Then it's just a script to calculate and add a misc. charge code line item for orders and invoices (recalculated based on what's shipped). Plus, we're adding a checkbox on AR_Customer to exclude for some customers. I'm sure Dan would not mind selling it multiple times once completed.

Gosh guys, thanks for the praise and recognition. I've been writing tariff scripts since 2019. This one for Bill's client is unique in that it runs in both SODE and SOIDE. Thus, it recalculates the backorder order /TARIFF MCC for partially shipped sales orders as well as invoices. Unfortunately, scripts that may seem to have a broad appeal, are in some way like Crystal reports. Everyone has different requirements, but this may be a good time to put up a big tent.

Like Dan, I've also done a bunch of tariff scripts since 2018. I've found there just isn't a 1-size that fits all as everyone's requirements are not quite the same. Some need to consider ship weight, some product line, some need overrides by customer at the SO level to exempt tariff, some need overrides at the invoice level to allow adjusting the tariff pct up or down since it could've changed from the time of the order. Then backorder situations can get tricky especially if dealing with a misc item vs a misc charge. What I'm laughing at is what @Doug Higgs said about what consultant should do!!

Like others, we have done a few tariff scripts, a handful in recent weeks, with each one having unique business requirements.  Customer rates, item rates, customer / item rates (stored in IM_PriceCode), rates applied to a "declared value" instead of sale price, rates applied based on steel / aluminum content, overrides by ship-to / customer / item / order...  Rates applied at the order stage carried through invoicing, or rates calculated / recalculated at the time of invoicing...

    There is no one-size-fits-all script.

I'm torn about this work because we're doing what seems to be a good amount of this tariff coding for our clients, learned a lot last time this came up, so from the perspective of consulting has done nothing but made us busier.  Well that and report requests so they can analyze stock origination how it's used in production and how to affect final costs.  While all this work may not even be used really because someone can't make up their mind what they're doing.... I can't tell if I'm bringing value to my client or not at this point.

Reading through these messages it convinces me that coding for tariff implementations can be like coding for esoteric salesperson commission structures. With many companies asking "doesn't everyone do it this way?" with a completely straight face...
