I have a client that is insisting that I install Sage 2019 to a symbolic drive that is linked to a Linux server so that the data is housed elsewhere for backup reasons. While I assume that the install will complete without any issues, this is not mentioned anywhere as a supported environment by Sage. Any thoughts on whether this might cause issues with either program functionality, file maintenance (like using DFDM, etc.) or reporting? TIA!

The purpose of symbolic links is to aid in the migration and compatibility with UNIX/Linux applications. In your case, these reasons don't apply. Additionally, the Sage 100 install program may see the symbolically linked folder for what it is, a location on a remote computer. Sage 100 will not install to a mapped drive, so it might not install to a linked folder.

If you are able to install, there will be a performance penalty with the symbolic link. Rather than the Windows OS communicating directly with hardware, it must contend with communicating with the OS on a remote computer.

Symbolic links were never intended to support Windows applications that are built upon accessing a host of shared files.

That's a very thorough explanation. I'm completely new to this term to begin with so I thought it would be hard to find anything useful on. Thank you, Myron!
