SUTA Rates in the New Payroll

Heads up RE: handling SUTA rates in the new version.  In Wisconsin employers are typically notified of the SUTA rate for the next year in October.  Historically we would enter the new rate in January after we processed W2s, even though we knew some payrolls would be processed under the old rate.  When we changed the rate, it updated the information on the quarterly tax report and we just had to make an adjusting GL entry.

With the new payroll, when you enter the rate, there's a field to enter the effective date.  As payroll is processed, the system does a calculation and records the amount of SUTA for each payroll against each employee.  By not entering the new rate before the first payroll in 2019 was processed, we had to go in and manually edit the SUTA amounts for every payroll for every employee.  Save yourselves some headaches and make sure the tax rates are correct BEFORE processing payroll for a new year.
