    Hi everyone.

We have a client on Sage100 Advanced 2020, who is presently running on an Azure application server, with two Remote Desktop Servers.  Everything is working quite well, so therefore their IT wants to change things !

They want to transition to Azure Virtual Desktop (which runs on Windows 10 Enterprise Multi Session).

Does anyone have any specific experiences running in this environment, any feedback, warnings ("Danger Will Robinson"), or thoughts in general ?

    Thanks in advance.

If that is the machine type that resets with each session, search for "VDI" discussions... I know there is at least one.

If it does reset after each session, Sage Intelligence is not going to work if they are using it.

I emailed this list to a customer recently, when they asked about VDI:

    • Troubleshooting errors / issues are very difficult because any changes on the workstation side are reset each time.
      • There is a recurring issue with Windows Updates (related to Paperless Office), and if you plan to install WU's to the VDI image, the fix for the recurring issue has to be handled at the same time.
      • Sage 100 product updates also have the same type of complication.  VDI images have to be updated each time a Sage product update is installed.
    • Sage Intelligence does not work well with VDI due to how the licenses work.
    • Some users have experienced unexplained slowness (no resolution was shared).
    • With Advanced, some have experienced difficulty (errors) with a workstation license file (activate.pvx), which may be related to VDI or the security restrictions put in place on that VDI environment.  (Standard has this file on the Sage server only, so this one issue is uniquely Advanced).
    • Sage 100 does store some settings in tables based on workstation name.  With that constantly changing, it can make for a less smooth user experience.
    • This Sage City thread describes a couple errors, with no resolution posted.
    • If the VDI can't be configured to preserve the user's Documents folder between sessions, Favourites (the feature replacement for My Tasks and Sage custom toolbar buttons) won't work.

No experience on the Azure side. Like Kevin says the VDI environment does work though with caveats.

I have a 10 user site that is 100% VDI with a very restrictive IT department.

The Sage Intelligence from what I’ve observed does appear to require a static desktop. I believe they single out the SI users for a “special” desktop that doesn’t get wiped on every logout/login to VDI.

I think there are also a few scripts that IT developed so that Sage ran smoother. I haven’t run into speed issues but always had an a+ VDI tech who had lots of experience for assistance.

In my experience this works best with a very experienced VDI technical person. It’s probably not going to go well if your IT person is an internal part time resource whose primary job is not IT.

In AVD with Advanced, once a second user attempted to launch on the same Windows 10, we would get weird behavior every other launch.  Sometimes errors (blank SY_Workstation), sometimes every other launch would just silently close/fail. It would eventually work, but the client didn't feel warm/fuzzy about it (and neither did we).  We tried MAS 90 Mode but performance was awful so we ended up abandoning multi Windows 10 and using Windows Server for the client images.

We're going to loop back and try again after next month's patches.
