Suggestions on modifying GL: Client running MAS200 3.71 (multiple companies) is upgrading to 2013 and wants to change his G/L accounts. Current structure is xxxx-xx-xx, and the new structure is yyyy-yy-yy. The new MAIN accounts he wants changed (some are the same as the old main accounts with a different label/meaning), and the two segments are being changed (meaning)? Of course we need to ""renumber"" historical transactions. Any ""EASY BUTTON"" solutions out there :-(

from what I remember of 3.71, changing accounts in 2013 is easier. So I would get the upgrade done, have the client verify all financials, then backup and start with project # 2 and use the GL change accounts utilities to renumber as needed. Renumbering a GL account takes all the history with it.

I disagree a little bit - it's much more forgiving in 3.71. Iff you want to renumber an account that is currently an asset and change it to a liability, you can't in 2013 and you can in 3.71.

In 2013 you can renumber an asset to a liability with the change utility, but I think you're right Beth - it's more restrictive about changing accounts across categories using account maintenance or account groups.

I only spent a month once trying to figure out why the migration from v3.71. Client changed a P/L account to a liability account. I would personally do it in v3.71 because it is less restrictive there.

In the past when I've had this same situation where the GL numbers were the same, but not, I had to renumber in two steps. I first renumbered the GL into a completely different set of numbers (this is to free up the once used accounts) and then perform a second renumber to move them back to their new accounts. Since you are using 8 characters and have a free space, you might consider expanding the third segment to 3 and adding a 9 to all accounts. For example: 1000-10-10 becomes 1000-10-109. Once you finish your last renumber you can reduce the account back to 8 characters. Sorry, I can't remember in 3.71, but may to reduce the account structure back to 8 through DFDM. As long as the last character is zero it should not matter. Absolutely do this in 3.71 because it considers the entire GL account number as unique so you wont need to deal with segment validation rules, etc.

I would vote for 3.71 too mainly because you don't have to worry about renumbering main accounts and segments, etc.
