    Try:  Role Maintenance/Security Tab/IM - uncheck 'Allow Automatic Display of Full Extended Description when not in a Grid'

    At one point, in Item Inquiry/Maintenance, the trick was to use Customizer to remove the ItemCodeDesc field from the tab sequence of the dMain panel.
