I know that Sage (maybe by order of M$?) has stopped selling the SQL runtime licenses, but are customers who had bought them previously still legal to use them?

    Phil,

MS SQL CAL continues to appear on the price list

Sage did send a couple notices regarding SQL compliance.
The issue appeared to be that the SQL CAL are restricted to ONLY being used with Premium in a NON commercial cloud environment.
Presumably the issue that Sage was dealing with was that companies bought the SQL CAL and ignored the restrictions that it could only be used for Premium and only in an on-prem install.
If I recall, 90 Minders caught this several months before the Sage emails started coming.
It's possible that the Sage order desk and/or the registration info sent by Sage for the SQL CAL didn't contain appropriate cautions about the usage rights/restrictions and that's why Sage sent around these notices.

So I think the answer is that provided the customer is current on subscription/license with Sage and is using the SQL ONLY for Sage 100 Premium --- not in the cloud and not using any other app ( such as CRM or other non-Sage 100 databases ) -- then I'd think they would be fine.

Someone else may have better info as I haven't followed this closely at all and never sold a SQL runtime via Sage.

I believe you are correct @Wayne Schulz  I have looked into this several times over the last few years, and the issue I have with the Sage SQL licensing is the price.  Pricing directly through MS is much less expensive.

I was just looking at the Sage price list Wayne posted and the price is lower than what I remember.  $11 per user is $132 per year, which seems pretty good, particularly if the current SQL version can be maintained / upgraded.  Is it possible Sage has lowered the SQL price or have I had too much coffee again?

I had noted the runtime as $120/year when I created the Premium FAQ

I've not actively updated the pricing and spent more time trying to add the pros/cons of using a runtime license since that was what customers seemed most confused about.

There was also confusion about the number of SQL licenses which would be required with answers ranging from - one for anyone who might access SQL to two - one for MAS_User and one for MAS_Reports. I have no idea which is correct.

My understanding is that you need a SQL CAL for each connection with SQL.  Since the print engine uses direct SQL connections (with MAS_Reports for authentication), each Sage user needs a CAL... adding more for non-Sage users who do Excel queries, use 3rd party functions / databases...

You can use the same SQL version and license for Sage that is paid for as long as it is a supported version for the Sage level you are taking your client to.   The unsupported versions of SQL would still work as well but Sage performance will be below what is expected when on new SQL versions and updated servers.
