  • 1.  S/O Entry slows down when any 2nd user opens S/O Entry

    Posted 11-14-2019 12:18
Client is running v2018.6 Std.  With only one person with S/O Entry open, S/O Entry runs perfectly fine/fast.  If any other user simply opens S/O Entry, it slows down, e.g. bringing up next sequential order # is delayed, and also when move from Lines to Header tab there's a delay in displaying the actual contents of Header tab.  This appears to have started upon upgrading from v2015.2 Std.  We haven't been able to trace the culprit to anything on the network.

I'm pretty sure I've had that somewhere. I'll look through my notes.

Howdy, Brett!  With Standard, the issue is resources on the server (and possibly the workstation), because it has to cache the open file info and it has to set locks on the server.  If the server is loaded and near it's resource limit, opens and locks are slow.  If it is using the swap file a lot, that is a clue you need more resources on the server and you may need to update the heap size to increase resources for locks.  When there is only one user, Windows locks aren't used because the workstation has full control of the file.  The moment another user logs in, now the original user no longer has exclusive control of the file and the Windows lock load gets noticed.

    Thanks a lot, @Bob Sosbee! Here's my client's response:

I would tend to agree if resources were low, however, as you can see from the task manager view below, the CPU barely makes above 5% utilization and typically hovers around 1-2% utilization.
In terms of memory and swap file, this system has 16 GB of RAM and as shown below, it is only using 2 GB.
Network is a gigabit connection with barely any usage as well.
Bottom line, does not appear to be a resource issue even when we simulate the problem of 2 users in Sales Order Entry.
This server has 1 job, to run Sage…that's it and resources are barely touched. This was taken a couple of minutes ago with 5 out of 7 total users in the system.

Something else to note is that when I'm the 2nd user in S/O Entry on the server, I'm not slow at all, although the first user/workstation is. And it also seems that if the 2nd user jumps into S/O Invoice Entry (instead of S/O Entry), that too slows things up.

Would love to know what info you have @Robert Wood.

Have you checked to make sure that firewall and antivirus isn't playing around on you? The firewall can delay the communication to the server and it could be from the client side or the server side. If you stop it on both see if there is any difference in speed. Since this is standard it is only a file server to the clients accessing the files. Doesn't matter the CPU speed as much on the server, however on the workstation it would. It is more of Disk IO and Network IO on the server, that is usually the issue. If they are using iSCSI over a slow network or one that has most bandwidth already used and the drives are 5,400 RPM then you might have an issue. Not saying that this is their issue but giving you an example.

Can you have two users on the server (RDP with Admin?) and see if there is any speed issue? If everything is running fast on the server then it is something before it comes in through the network. I would then start to eliminate things starting with those running on the server and work your way to the workstations.

FWIW, Though I've not helped a customer with this speed issue in SO, I've seen this most often AP, this change may have the same result. Started using this when AP started using more memory, in like version 4.4-ish.  Adjust the amount virtual memory on the workstations.  In the Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > Performance Settings button > Advanced tab, Virtual memory Change button > change the Custom size to allow for more use of the computer's harddrive (see screenshot).

Hmm.  If you are on the server, then you are not going over the NIC.  Two things that I've stumbled on before:
    1. AVS on the workstation investigating the stream (not the files).  Check to see if heuristic scanning is active.
    2. This will sound stupid, but it actually happened to me - check that the server NIC is in full duplex mode?  This happened when a customer had bonded NICs to improve throughput and then later took out one of the NICs that failed and never switched the remaining NIC back to full duplex.
    3. If this is a VM you may be having issues with the VM drivers for the NIC.  See if the current drivers are installed in both the VM itself and the OS.

So the issue now appears to somehow be related to the S/O Entry screen customizations, which we first determined via *ESC, and then secondly (with *ESC disabled) by testing with unmodified screens.  Going to try re-creating S/O Entry.
