My goto setup right now is 4 cores / 16 GB RAM, but ideally you'd have enough RAM to fit the entire MAS_xxx databases in it. Make sure the storage is SSD.

With just three users, getting a SQL Server Standard license + 3 Per-User CALs would be better value than buying SQL Server Per-Core (the tipping point is ~25 users).

Thanks @Steve Iwanowski - What about running with SQL Express with just three users?  Obviously not supported by Sage but is it feasible?  Asking for a "friend".....

As long as the MAS_xxx databases are under 10GB, it should work. Performance will suffer (only 1 processor socket and 1GB of RAM), and you won't have any of the SQL Server Agent capabilities until you upgrade to Standard.

Server + 3 CALs pricing should be ~$1600.

On a roll here.  What about Sage OEM SQL license?  A good deal?  Something worth exploring?

If they run their Sage 100 in a data center without dedicated hardware for their server, the Sage OEM SQL license cannot be used.

I avoided it due to the licensing restrictions (can only be used for Sage 100, no other databases and/or uses), but if you're not a paranoid Microsoft Partner, maybe it's alright. I think it's still an older version of SQL, too.
