Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012. Does anyone know how to determine the number of SQL CALs purchased? Sage 100 premium user wants to add Sage 100 licenses and wants to be sure they are in compliance.

The short (and safest) answer is one for each Named user (not just the concurrent count) of Sage, plus the service account. The official Microsoft response is that any user that *could* access the environment (even temporarily) should be fully licensed.

@SteveIwanowski I want to know how many SQL CALs they currently own. How do I determine this?

They should be able to submit a report to you from their MS agreements (they can pull those from their Volume License Service Center page (https://www.microsoft.com/Licensing/servicecenter/home.aspx). There's no actual enforcement of SQL CALs (or Windows Server CALs for that matter), so it's basically the honor system.

...until Microsoft requests a 'Software Asset Management Review' (aka Audit) where you need to show proof of license purchases.

But the good news is that after a SAM review, they give you an opportunity to alleviate any license shortfalls by submitting new invoices. Please don't ask why I know so much about this process (it wasn't internal, i swear!) :)

LOL... I had difficulty finding any information on determining current CALs. Thanks for your help. They bought at least some of the CALs from Sage at various times. I am just going to recommend buying the equivalent SQL CALs to the new Sage 100 user licenses.

If they bought them from Sage before definitely include the CALs in the quote this time. I had a Sage 300 issue a year or two ago where the end user had both Sage 300 and SQL CALs from Sage originally. When I asked for a quote to add two more users, Sage only quoted the 300 licenses. When I placed the order, they tried to charge me for the CALs as well, which had not been part of the quote I asked for. I did eventually get Sage to include the CALs at the price they quoted, but it almost wasn't worth the time and aggravation to get it done...
