  • 1.  Sales Tax Nexus Study

I have a customer that is evaluating Avatax. As a first step Avalara has suggested a Nexus Study ($4,500). Not having anything as a reference point for that fee, is that reasonable? Are there others that can perform that service?

    Any recommendations will be appreciated.

I have a customer currently looking at Avalara, and the Avalara rep just suggested they get with their CPA about what states they have nexus with.  I pulled data from their system with sales and invoice count by state and year for 2018 & 2019 which they took to their CPA along with the Avalara web page about requirements by state.

Thanks @Phil McIntosh when we (client and I) were talking to Avalara they mentioned that advertising (product banners at sponsored events) may constitute nexus and that came as a surprise to their CPA. Got them wondering if they need a "Sales Tax Nexus" expert?

I’d suggest they speak to their CPA. If the CPA isn’t good with sales tax they may want to consider whether a separate tax advisor is warranted.

Paying someone to tell you what you need when that company is also selling what you need is not advisable.

Be prepared for Avalara to be costly and a ton of paperwork and wait time. And the margin is small and one off but their bills most certainly are not.

My former CPA firm had a Director of Tax who concentrated in sales tax. She quoted me once on this type of analysis and it was a similar amount.
