Sage will Discontinue Sage Payroll 2017 at the end of this year

  • 1.  Sage will Discontinue Sage Payroll 2017 at the end of this year

Since we'll have the opportunity to speak to Sage at 90Minds, I thought I'd let you know what we found out last week.

I'm not sure everyone is up to speed on the fact that Sage is retiring legacy Payroll versions at the end of this year.  That kinda puts us in a pickle, since we were so cautious (and rightly so!) about upgrading clients to Payroll 2018.  When Payroll 2020 is released in December, Sage is planning on retiring all legacy Payroll versions.  Originally, they were going to support Payroll 2017 until mid year in 2020, but since they've changed the release dates for Payroll from the rest of the Sage 100 versions, they have announced that the TTU's released at the end of this year will be the last TTU's released.  It does appear, however, in looking at the chart below, that they might provide phone support through 09/30/2020, and they might do a 2020 TTU release in January of 2020 for 2020, but I think we need to confirm this with Sage this weekend.    From Sage's website:

    * Electronic Reporting: As previously announced, the Electronic Reporting module (formerly known as Magnetic Media Reporting) was retired by 2014 (for those versions of Sage 100 that had it). Please Note: You still have the ability to print Payroll and Accounts Payable tax forms using the Federal and State Tax Reporting menu tasks. You can print and/or electronically file W-2, 941, 1095, 1099, plus 330+ signature-ready federal and state tax forms to plain paper. There is no cost to print, but there is a minimal cost to eFile. Click here to get more eFile details

**Tax Table Updates are updates to existing tax tables. New Tax Tables may not be included with any updates for prior versions of the software.

Sue, do you interpret this as "You'll need to cross your fingers that something doesn't break and you have to manually update your tax tables in 2020"  Or do you think the module would become inoperable?  I would think the former, but I don't know in these SAAS times.

Pretty sure they can't make the software inoperable if the client is still paying their annual Payroll fee even if the client is on a version Sage monitors  (It seems like 2016.3 is the last version that I think Sage cannot monitor).  But, as you say Rhonda, who knows?!!

We have clients on older versions for several reasons:  Mostly because they have mods, like Garnishments, that neither the client nor we have wanted to upgrade.  And we've just manually been changing the tax tables for them, so I know we can get around the "no TTU" thing – it's just more expensive for the clients for us to do that.  But your question about turning the software into "read only" mode is an excellent one to ask!

This is also posted to MySageSell. It's a bit cryptic as to whether Sage will disable older versions of payroll after their cutoff date. Personally, I doubt it as I think Sage would be afraid of negative publicity.

IMPORTANT REMINDERAs of December 31, 2019, Tax table updates will no longer be available for the 2017 version of Payroll in Sage 100. After this time, customers will need to have Sage 100 Payroll 2.0 installed in order to receive automated tax table updates. Support for the legacy Payroll module will continue until September 30, <g class="gr_ gr_270 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="270" data-gr-id="270">2020</g> for customers wishing to update tax tables manually, but we recommend that partners start talking with customers about upgrading to the latest Payroll module by the end of the year. Please see our supported versions page for more information.

UPDATE: In January 2020 all customers will need to be off the legacy payroll and onto the payroll that was introduced with Sage 100 2018. We have just added an additional class next week March 6 from <g class="gr_ gr_274 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" id="274" data-gr-id="274">9am</g> – noon Pacific. If you've spoken to a customer who will be upgrading soon or a customer or business partner who is new to payroll, this is a must take <g class="gr_ gr_273 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="273" data-gr-id="273">class</g>.

An important thing to remember - during 2019 Sage will not upgrade any older payroll version for tax changes that require a program fix. This is consistent with their prior messaging. The takeaway is that if you have customers in tax complex states and there is a big tax change requiring a program change - the customer needs to be on 2.x as Sage will not be making program changes to payroll versions prior to 2.x.

Not all tax law changes can be updated solely through tax tables.

I confirmed that it'll keep working, you'll need to update ttu's manually at some point as noted above, but Aatrix will not work after the retirement. Per Diane Coffman

Note that you can get data out of the legacy payroll and upload it to Aatrix.  I believe @Lee Graham has  a Crystal report for this. (We have a customer whose renewal date is Jan 5 and before payroll was split off on it's own they were never on time with their renewal check.)
