The question of keys and registration logic was asked for the second year in a row at the 2019 MOTM Townhall with Sage.  Kevin <g class="gr_ gr_775 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="775" data-gr-id="775">Kawado</g> of Sage was at our meeting this year and posts this response to the question: (the caveat "Distribution to resellers only" is the same as our Vegas rules)

For Distribution to resellers only:Beginning with the 2018.0 release, a change was made to the registration logic which will stop the system from downloading new product keys from Sage unless specifically requested. This is to allow resellers an opportunity to continue using older product keys before switching the customer over to their new system either in terms of migrating from Sage 100 to Sage 100cloud or moving from a Standard version of the product to Advanced or Premium. A valid product key must still be provided at installation, but going forward, that key will not be updated until the "Update" button is pressed in the Registration dialog. This will allow customers to run parallel versions of Sage 100 with different product keys.

I need my shock and confused emoji.
So, if I understand right, after installation, Sage 100 won't contact the mother ship every 28 days for updated keys? What would keep it from expiring?
Don't get me wrong.  I understand why we need it to not check in some cases.

Does this solve the issue?  The issue as I understand it is the client is on 2016.  They up their license to 100c. They request to move to premium.  2016 calls the mother ship every 28 days.  The mothership gives new keys.  The 2016 installs says... "sorry these keys are for premium.  This is standard.  I quit."

Keep posting questions (rebuttals) and I'll get this feedback to Sage.

Remember, the only versions of Sage 100 with phone home self-updating keys:

    2015.5+
    2016.2+
    2017.0+

So if I was upgrading a 2015.1 or a 2016.1 to 2018 then the older version would not have key update problems because that version of Sage doesn't self-update the keys anyways.

It's when the older version of Sage 100 has key self-update that you could see issues.

The 2018.x "click here and update" seems as if it's going to help only for upgrades where the version you are moving FROM is 2018.
