Sage suggests customers review Sage sold SQL use for license compliance

  • 1.  Sage suggests customers review Sage sold SQL use for license compliance

Sage is suggesting that users review by 8/31/20 their use of any Microsoft SQL license that may have been purchased through Sage as part of a Sage 100 Premium implementation.

I believe several of our SQL experts already identified the issues being raised:

    1. The ISV version of SQL license sold by Sage can't be used in a hosted environment
    2. The ISV version of SQL license sold by Sage has to be dedicated only to Sage use ( can't run other non-Sage 100 apps on that SQL license)

Sage is asking that users check for compliance by 8/31 and presumably pay for the proper license with Microsoft.

They have issued a flowchart to help in determining whether a site is in compliance.

Looks like they are playing catch-up on the issue we discovered during an upgrade for one of our customers.  Better late than never I guess.

After MOTM I have been wondering about something @Carmen Cruz said about SQL runtime being included with Premium.  If that is true, why on earth would anyone want to pay Sage for it?  If anyone has anything in writing about the included SQL, we could certainly use that to make it more cost effective for some 100c customers (with their own server) to upgrade to Premium.

SQL OEM version will be provided by requests ONLY for Premium.  However, if they are needing it for CRM or an other program that needs SQL the client would need to supply their own version.

@Carmen Cruz we were told you could use it for Sage CRM, only for Sage products, is that not accurate?

If you have Premium and Sage provides the SQL OEM.  Yes you can point CRM to that SQL Instance as well.  You will be told you can't but you can.  You can even add new DB from totally different programs and they would work.  Just sayin. :)

I just posted a question to Sage City (Partners section) to hopefully obtain the official story on whether the SQL license is ever included with Premium.

SQL is an OEM version. Sage does not provide a license.

I'm not sure what that means.  If Sage doesn't supply a license, what good are the install files?  Anybody can get the full SQL installer directly from Microsoft.
(I must have misinterpreted your "SQL OEM version will be provided" comment).

I think OEM installers have the license built in?

A few years ago I had a customer call Sage and ask some basic questions about the SQL requirements of Premium.

Sage was not able to supply any meaningful information.

In turn I asked the group which created quite a few good feedback comments including about license restrictions of OEM SQL.

Customers are disappointed when they learn how difficult it can be to get seemingly basic info from Sage.

I summarized them in this document https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_y2wlmQSZGVtew4zVctpQKZKnQX0kl-lcTWUZ8UdIKM/edit

My understanding is Microsoft no longer has a SQL ISV program (see attachment), and that the most recent version of SQL you can get through Sage is v2014.

So if M$ no longer has this program, is $age still including the SQL licenses in the customer maintenance renewal calculation and just pocketing the $$?
