  • 1.  Sage Premium: Install SQL on Same Server as Sage or Not?

    Posted 11-30-2020 20:03
Although Sage says it "supports the installation of Sage 100 Premium and Microsoft SQL Server on the same server as well as the installation of the two products on separate servers" does anyone have recommendations if same or different servers is better?  The reason I'm asking is we are moving a very large customer from Advanced to Premium and we need maximum performance.  There are 20+ companies and 100+ users concurrently active throughout the day.

It is better to put SQL on a dedicated server for larger users. The main reason is that SQL maintenance and tuning is easier to do when it's not interfering with other apps. But the performance also comes into it, as your customer will find that once it has SQL other users for that will come pretty readily. Also, security will need to be different on SQL server than on Sage and other apps.

Other issues/changes I've noted in upgrades to Premium:

What's NOT Available in Sage 100 Premium

    • Old-style custom financial statement ( *UNHIDEGL )
    • Work Order Module or MRP ( Must use Production Management )
    • Business Insights REPORTER
    • Access to the SOTAMAS90 ODBC for reporting ( use a direct SQL connection instead which is significantly faster )
    • Previously, SOTAMAS90 would prompt for what company code to report on - with the SQL ODBC you will either need to manually change the "default" database or create a separate DSN for each company ( if multi-company ) or use custom coding to swap the DSN info on-the-fly.
    • Automatic Update ( Library Master )
    • ODBC Security ( Library Master Role Maintenance )
    • C/S ODBC Driver ( use a direct SQL connection which is much faster )
    • Change Data Location ( Library Master - Company Maintenance )
    • SY0_CompanyParameters is not available in Premium ( used to pull in parameters like company code, company name)
    Full Document - updates/corrections/additions welcomed

I share the same philosophy as Jerry. Once you have a SQL server in place, there is a good chance that it will be used for other applications at some point.  Depending on these applications, the number of I/O operations might significantly change and impact Sage's performance.

If the user base for Sage is larger, then I put SQL on a dedicated SQL server. If there are only a few users who use Sage simultaneously, then utilizing the same server for both  Sage and SQL will do.

Most environments today are based on virtualization (e.g., MS HyperV). In those environments, there is no physical network cable between the two virtual servers. I am not a virtualization expert, but I believe that with properly configured virtual NICs, the difference between a (virtual) two server setup and a one server setup shouldn't be too big. Especially if we consider that Sage and SQL on the same server might have to compete for resources. Is there a virtualization pro here that can shed some light?

I also always wonder if using the IP address vs. the UNC path gives any performance advantage.
