Sage sends out a notice which includes... "We recommend that you upgrade to version 2.20 before processing your first payroll run in 2020."

It looks like it incorporates a change for Arkansas and new 2020 filing statuses.  I can see getting this installed for 2020 for new hires but is this really NECESSARY for the first payroll run in 2020?  Am I missing something?

I think the part that is missing is that Sage isn't very detailed on why you should update to 2.20. My interpretation is that every fix and tax oddity is only going to be resolved in the latest release of payroll.

In other words, Sage doesn't intend to issue patches for prior Payroll 2.x versions.

There was a tax table update issued on 12/24/2019. It's possible that some of the latest tax table updates only work with the latest payroll which I think is why Sage is suggesting strongly that users stay current on the latest payroll update.

Lets face it - exactly nobody wants to update a full payroll version during the busy time of the year. Unfortunately, it appears we are stuck with these payroll updates.

Agreed @Wayne Schulz - The "whys" of upgrading are in the shadows.  Accounting departments are overwhelmed during this most joyous time of year.  After 40 years of the repeat and rinse cycle, there is very little joy in Mudviille.  My read on the need for v2020 speed is for the new W-4 changes.  Without 2020, you don't get the updates.  I think what Sage doesn't acknowledge is that very few resellers pushed clients to upgrade to PR2018 due to the many little gotchas.  Pioneers truly were shot with arrows.  None of my iowa clients moved until they provided a setting to round SIT to whole dollars.  For anyone still on 2017 PR (or prior), there is a snowballs chance in hell that the migration is going to happen.  Still way too many questions about the tax rules and way too little documentation or guidance about them.

I CERTAINLY hope that there is a MOTM session for PR and where to find GOOD documentation.  The built in help just isn't cutting it.

Based on how long it takes to install, I don't know why this is called 2.2 instead of just 2.19.5.

Just remember the client install is prompted for an update and any IT that tightens installs requires every computer to be logged in as administrator or at least the administrator password provided after this minor update.
