I've been sitting through this info-mercial since 1pm, not much meat and potatoes here for a Sage 100 consultant, maybe some Sage Partner Cloud stuff but mostly reminded people of stuff we have heard before.   Yelp review -   meh!

I'll cut to the chase and only post things that I think were new or noteworthy:

    1. Sage Partner Cloud - probably not new but worth noting that it won't work with Sage 100 Premium ( and per Partner Hub only works with Sage and Tangerine ISV solutions ). A list of partners who could help you with your customers on Azure was discussed.

    2. Sage Data & Analytics ( a white label of the UK based ZAP ) will be available for a fee for Sage 100/300 - March 19 is the kickoff webinar

    3. The winning company for most migrations from (presumably) Sage legacy 100/300/500 to Intacct was Brainsell with 4 migrations ( alas second place was not a set of steak knives .. but went to RKL with 3 migrations)

    4. Most VARS are renewing customers at about 90% though Blytheco hit 95%

    5. Aziz Benmalek ( replacement for Jennifer Warawa )

    His Four Tenants of Strategy
    - Cloud-first but not cloud-only
    - Drive great digital experience
    - One Sage
    - How do we put more skin in the game with our key players

    His Four  Pillars of Strategy
    - Extend platform to drive new revenue
    - Strategic partnerships ( AWS, Microsoft )
    - Mid-Market - build services, capacity, practices with key players who can help drove adoption and/or renewal
    - How do we continue to perform with our existing VAR ecosystem

I forgot to mention that Sage will start marketing Sage Partner Cloud to end users in February 2021 via email and an assortment of other avenues.

    Best to be prepared.

    - Premium is not supported
    - only Sage and Tangerine appear on approved ISV list ( see Partnet hub )

This will not be a standard price list type quote since you’d need to price Azure plus Sage license plus your setup and configuration ( initial and ongoing ).

I predict this may be a time consuming task to reply to request for quotes.

As I was sort of watching the ‘All Hands’ meeting I thought of how the banter in 90Minds used to be great, but did not come here as I used to. My apologies to the old guard who remember the good old days.

From the cloud perspective the infomercial for the selected VARs is an interesting continuation of the partner consolidation process. Until a few years ago Sage would never endorse an individual partner unless you gave them a percentage of revenue. We tried to become and were close to being a preferred hosting partner but the percentage was too high for the market and our margins to bare in a commodity like market where we try not to compete on price but service. Like the “master Var” program Sage is picking partners and not open to anyone who qualifies. Interesting that Sage appears less afraid of “legal” which is probably a good thing for more nimble action when needed.

I hope the Azure partners and VARs who chose the Sage Partner Cloud understand that intrusion, downtime, virus/malware, etc are a constant battle in a global war. Regardless of how well you do it, there will be a time when you lose an individual battle and you must be prepared to recover from the damage and limit it to the greatest extent possible. If the NSA can be hacked so can we all. Make sure your contract with your customers is very strongly worded to limit your liability

The new guy sounded ok. I have stopped drinking cool aid and judge people and companies based on actions.

What I see as the hidden gotchas:

    1. Only Sage 100 Standard supported
    2. Limited number of ISVs certified ( at present 2/18/21 only Sage and Tangerine )
    3. Licensing cost is higher despite not having access to Premium ( important for some larger customer's who use external reporting )
    4. Licensing cost is higher and there is no Sage support bundled
    5. N-2 promise is 'wait and see'. Moving this to Azure doesn't miraculously mean all the ISVs are ready to update timely
    6. Quoting this is going to be nightmarish for VARS because there is no standard price list ( Spoiler: Any who are successful are going to likely have a price list similar to existing hosts - begging the question of why not use an existing host)
    7. Suggestion by Sage to use a competitor to host your customer is a bit naïve
    8. As @Gary Feldman correctly suggests - there is HUGE liability and responsibility for hosting ( security, backups, etc )

As I will again state in my MOTM 2021 presentation - DON'T DO ONESIES AND TWOSIES

You won't make money doing one or two of these

SAGE Software said they will start marketing SPC - well they forgot that they have already started! - A medium sized non-profit client reported that on their recently received SAGE 100 STD annual Business Care renewal, SAGE Software stated "SAGE 100 can now be easily deployed in the cloud on Microsoft Azure."

So my client asked "What does that entail?"
In general terms how should I answer his question. I have zero experience with SAGE 100 in a hosted environment.

Here is my rev 1.0 ( beta ) attempt at a blurb:

    -- BEGIN --
Sage Partner Cloud is a new program ( started in December 2020 ). You would continue to use the same underlying Sage 100 software as is presently used. The difference is the licensing price changes to reflect the software being managed on an Azure server for you.

For this you should expect to pay a price starting at $ x per user per year for the hosting and our support.

This would be in addition to the Sage licensing fee you pay each year to Sage.

Under this new Sage Partner Cloud program the Sage licensing fee no longer includes support from Sage. The license also only allows you to use the Sage 100 Standard release ( Advanced and Premium/SQL versions are not currently available on SPC ).

At some point in the future Sage might allow us to handle the invoicing of your annual licensing. As of now you'd continue to pay Sage directly for the annual licensing ( which does NOT include the cost of Azure hosing ).
    -- END --

In 90% of these inquiries I find the customer/prospect just wants to know a number so they can do some quick math in their head. I don't think this is the type of work that you should undertake as a sideline ( as I've noted ). Probably the best response is to find an existing host ( not a competitor ) who is a CSP and who you can refer this to for the hosting portion.

I'd probably be inclined to include a one-time setup fee to cover the quoting and setup.

In most cases I find once customers hear that there is a fee for hosting they are going to self-qualify themselves very quickly and either find the $$ or " go check with their boss ".

I strongly advise at keeping your blurb generic. Expect that the content will be shared or if Sage makes a sales call the customer may forward it. I would not get involved in writing any overtly negative comments. Save those for the phone... ;-)

And another “gotcha” to avoid ...

Don’t work yourself into the “let me work up a price comparison” trap.

I used to be asked to do these by customers. I’d spend a few hours working up all the math and details. Then I’d give it to them and they’d glance at it and in two seconds tell me they weren’t that interested.

Takeaway 1: A customer will (almost) never say no to your offer to do something for them for free ( like a price comparison or a detailed upgrade quote )

Takeaway 2: I found in most ( but not all cases ) using “starts at” for an estimated price got me out of the free busy quote work.

Ex, our typical Crystal report starts at $xxx - should we keep talking?

Our standard upgrade starts at $yyy - should we keep talking?

There are always exceptions to how much time I put into these types of quotes though I find “starts at” is my favorite tool for quoting and qualifying.

@Wayne Schulz Thanks Wayne, You are correct. The client is most likely mildly interested. I asked him to scan and email to me a copy of the annual renewal he received from SAGE. I'm still waiting. Your response sounds "just right" to give him the ability to say "I checked on it, and its going to cost us more money."

It was a boring presentation, thanks for the Recap @Wayne Schulz  I did look here but must have missed the post @Jeff Schwenk
Nice to see RKL recognized for Migrations to Intacct.  Noticed they spelled the name wrong of one of the partner that could help/assist.  Hate the idea of everyone getting all "excited" by the word "cloud"; for a successful referral with cloud hosting, you need a stellar support team.  I agree doing one or two is not going to work.
