I'm not sure that anyone will have a good answer for this but here goes.

Client is in process of changing from FRX to Sage Intelligence.

They are concerned about security of report files generated by SI.  If an excel file is distributed to someone who subsequently leaves the company they are concerned that that person could still get into that info even if the file is password protected.  Since that person would have had the password to look into it in the first place, if they have obtained a copy of the file they of course could still get into it.

In FRX they would generate the files in FRX format and you would have to have access to the program to look at the info which they would no longer have.

Personally, I don't see how you could protect against something like this with an excel file.  The only thing I could think of was somehow preventing someone from copying the file, but I really don't know how that could be accomplished.

    Thoughts?

It would take some VB programming with the excel file, but you could create the password protection within it using VB to enter a user and pass and have it go to a website and gets a list of valid users and or passwords to view the report or whatever permissions you want them to have. VB would then unprotect what is needed to be seen.
