Licensing for SI is by workstation. When the workstation changes in a pooled virtual desktop environment such as Citrix, is there a solution to the workstation licensing used by SI? The SI user doesn't always get allocated the same workstation.

There isn't unless IT can static assign the machine  # to the same person.  I've had IT do this for the accounting dept but everyone else gets random.

What Nancy said. Just had a customer who is a big VDI user and they had to assign a static setup for the Sage Intelligence users.

Well the IT provider is unwilling to configure the VDIs with static workstation IDs. Here is their response.

We will work with Sage support directly. Most likely their development team can implement a permanent fix for this Sage Intelligence licensing. I guarantee they can fix this. It's a matter of talking to the right people. Its not going to happen overnight. Sage is a big software vendor and we are not the only people in the world running pooled desktops. It's a very common way of deploying enterprise level desktops. We integrate hundreds of applications in this setup with hundreds of different vendors and each one has their own way of licensing a product and this is the first time a pooled desktop has been an issue. I know Sage can fix this but we will handle this directly with them.

I wanted to reply with "Good luck with that."

Will try using the license manager in SI to deleted workstation IDs and re-register the workstation. I wonder if Sage keeps track of the registration activity.

"We integrate hundreds of applications in this setup with hundreds of different vendors".  Hundreds of different vendors?  Wow, that's a lot of installation routines.  LOL.

well the right people have to stay there long enough to care and won't happen - probably ever!

    Myron,

I went through the EXACT same thing. These large companies with VDI and very formal IT departments largely have this attitude. It is EXTREMELY EXTREMLY frustrating because every move they make is to reach out to Sage which in essence is second-guessing us.

In my case, they did reach out to Sage. And the outcome is pretty much what you'd expect. Sage walks through the exact same thing that we do. In some cases, they may have one or two hidden articles that they access but I've yet to see anything that wasn't already discussed or recommended here.

Once the IT department has experienced that Sage does not have a magic wand and will not write a one-off modification for their company the attitudes can change.

In my case for the last upgrade, I had Project Manager, Network Admin, Network Admin Boss(es), Desktop VDI person, DB analyst and sometimes a DB Application analyst ( for exports ).  All of these people looked over my shoulder and that was before the accounting director, the asst director and all the accounting department were involved. Throw in the CTO and their second in command and this turned into a huge project.

The nice thing is that once you get the change of their internal flow they can become good customers because it's very hard for ISVs or other consultants to know / understand what they are walking into.
