There is definitely value and proven ROI with Sage Alerts, but it does not sell as well as it should. They are finally releasing their "new technology" version, but does that warrant a price increase? I question the wisdom of the increase, but I hope the new technology will help the product and sales.

Anything requiring a PHD and certification to casually resell is no good IMO.

Full featured Visual Cut costs $360, does about 95% of what SA&W does (and more!), plus it is so much easier to use / support.
Does that 5% (New / Modified records based alerts) warrant a 2000%+ price premium?

First off I agree with Kevin, Visual cut works 80% of the time for a solution to the problem.  In the cases it doesn't SA&W serves a purpose.  That said the interface on the current version is beyond horrible.  With the new interface it will be an easier sell for sure.  Being able to access it from a workstation in the browser is a very big selling point for the clients that currently have the product.  I'm hoping they will also update and fix some of the oddities with setup of things like email accounts, or at least provide better documentation.  I'm curious about this release and will happily add it to the bag of tricks if the new web ui is truly functional.

With both SA&W and SageCRM experience is value, having experience with both products with a large number of installs makes selling our services (knowledge) so much easier as other individuals don't want to take the time.  So if you are looking for turnkey solution they are not, if you are looking for solution with services behind it they are great.

    Just my two cents...
