Nevermind......  A downside to repurposing an existing import is that there may be some perform logic that is not needed in the repurposed import.  Such is the case here.  Will I ever learn and wish I could recover the "wasted" time.

I feel like I've run into this before, where the import seems to ignore substrings for Divisions or Vendors/Customers.  I think maybe importing into a temp field first and then calculating from that temp field worked?

Not sure of the exact issue, but the solution was to rewrite the import.  I believe the VI that I imported had perform logic associated with it.  The rewrite left that baggage behind.
