Deadlines are very important. Quality is more important than deadlines. Do everything you can to meet the deadline, however, if meeting the deadline means sacrificing quality, then make sure it's perfect and turn it in late if you have to. A customer (or anyone) will initially be upset that a project is late but that will fade if it is done well. If you turn a project in on time and it is done incorrectly, a customer will always remember the project was screwed up, and meeting the deadline is irrelevant.

Also maybe ask how they plan and manage a major project. Look for sensitivity to deadlines and ability to organize and communicate. Problem solver mentality is big on my list.

I think the focus should be on the employee's basic abilities and not so much on whether they know Sage. To most people, Sage is Sage, not Sage 50, 100, 300, or whatever. How are their Excel skills. Can they do formulae, pivot tables, queries. Do they know a debit from a credit? Can they think beyond the basic problem at hand. If they are a mid level hire, ask about accounting situations, can they do bank recs....... You can teach Sage, you don't want to teach basic skills......

Good to know. My opinion is based on the tests I've had to take for partner certifications.

I think Sage U has a bunch of the certifications available without videos.

I've always found the Sage U tests to be a joke. Memorize a video, and be good at word games in multiple choice tests = win. That doesn't mean you know anything about actually working with the software.
Easier to sell to a customer because it is official, but if I was seeking a quality evaluation method I'd build my own.
- Describe the steps to do X (adjust an invoice, post a sales batch, reverse a check, apply a prepayment to an invoice, process month end... whatever skills are required for the specific position).
- Include a few hands-on tasks too... like:
- Print a check to vendor XYZ for what's due this month, taking any applicable discount.
- Find the reason bank code A is out of balance for last month end.
- Tell me if AR / AP are properly balanced with the GL for last month end (and see if they try to use Aging instead of the module TB...).

There are a number of these types of things on Sage U. It's probably cheaper and better to point the customer there than to try to reinvent the wheel. These are likely billed as something like a certification test. The cost per test may be high but unless they are churning through employees I still think it's probably cheaper to visit Sage U and sign the prospective employee up for certification of some sort.
