Sage 100

What is everyone's Best Practice for assigning the port number Sage?  Can you run multiple versions of Sage on the same port?  Ever since day one of installing Sage ADV, I have always used a unique port ID usually tied to the release number (e.g. below would be port 9710).  But while installing the latest release at a client, it dawned on me after 20 years, is it necessary or can all installed versions use the same port?

I agree with Kevin.  You must use different ports.

My practice is to use the year to distinguish.    2021 uses port 9921.   2022 uses port 9922.    Easier to remember.

Several years ago a Sage 100 Advanced test system that was installed by IT on a new server was locking up.  IT asked me to take a look at it.  I ran NETSTAT and determined the cause was the BackupExec backup software uses port 10000 by default and IT never changed the Sage 100 default port.  I should have charge double for reviewing an IT setup.

Good one... and it's a wise practice to google the port numbers you plan to use (if using your own logic) to make sure the selected value is not commonly used by other software.  (Really odd Sage still uses 10000... they could easily implement version specific defaults like is being discussed here).

I like to choose a random number in the 9000 - 9999 range.  Makes it hard to predict.
