  • 1.  Sage 100 Advanced version 2019 to Version 2022 Upgrade

    Posted 12-11-2022 09:30
I am preparing to install Sage 100 version 2022 Advanced on the same server as version 2019 Advanced.  I read the Upgrade Checklist, and although I have done this several times before, the instructions seem confusing.  Below is step 11 on page 29 of the upgrade checklist.

    11.  If Sage 1002022 is installed on the same computer as an earlier version of Sage 100, complete this step to avoid errors when printing forms and reports in the earlier version:
Copy the pvxwin32.exe.config file from the ..\MAS90\Home folder in your 2019 installation to the same folder in the 2022 installation. You must complete this step on both the server and the workstation.

So, yes, Sage 100 2022 will be installed on the same computer so I understand the "step" needs to be completed.  Here's the step:

"Copy the pvxwin32.exe.config file from the ..\MAS90\Home folder in your 2019 installation to the same folder in the 2022 installation. You must complete this step on both the server and the workstation."

My questions:  1.  If I install version 2022 on the server and don't install the client on the workstations today, will any users have issues printing from version 2019 tomorrow? 2. I don;t understand how "copying pvxwin32.exe.config file from the ..\MAS90\Home folder in your 2019 installation to the same folder in the 2022 installation" would affect anything in version 2019.  Nothing in version 2019 changes.  I am sure there are some DLLs and other files that get copied on the server, but how would copying pvxwin32.exe.config from 2019 to 2022 help solve a 2019 printing issue?

I am hoping to get some guidance / re-insurance as to what can be installed on the server today without breaking anything for the 2019 users tomorrow.

    Doug,

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that step is only necessary if the prior version was 2017 or earlier.  I did an upgrade from 2021 to 2022 and I read that same step but didn't think it actually applied in my case.  This was almost 2 weeks ago and I did not copy the pvxwin32.exe.config file at all. In my case nothing broke for the uses; they have been using it without any problems.

I am a little apprehensive about this.  There are 30 users, including 4 remote offices in different states.  I definitely don't need a Monday morning "nobody can print" call!

Error: "Unable to cast COM object of type" when printing in Sage 100 2017 and earlier versions after installing Sage 100 2018 or later versions

The above KB discusses the issue related to Sage 100 2017 or lower when upgrading to 2018+ and experiencing issues with Crystal compatibility.

    My questions:

    1. If I install version 2022 on the server and don't install the client on the workstations today, will any users have issues printing from version 2019 tomorrow?

    No

    2. I don't understand how "copying pvxwin32.exe.config file from the ..\MAS90\Home folder in your 2019 installation to the same folder in the 2022 installation" would affect anything in version 2019. Nothing in version 2019 changes. I am sure there are some DLLs and other files that get copied on the server, but how would copying pvxwin32.exe.config from 2019 to 2022 help solve a 2019 printing issue?

This is only needed if you upgrade from 2017 (or earlier) to 2018+ AND run a standalone workstation setup or RDP so users can test Sage 100 before an upgrade. I'm not aware of any Crystal conflicts from 2019 to 2022 though I would happily update this post if someone had a different experience

I know for all my upgrades, so long as the customer has been 2018 or higher to start with, I have not had to fuss with Crystal compatibility.

Thanks @Wayne Schulz  I have seen that post and recently used it for a 2016 to 2022 upgrade. I was confused when I read the 2022 upgrade checklist.  It seems that the Sage 2022 upgrade checklist is incorrect.  Shocking, I know.  It would be nice if someone would review this stuff for accuracy before publishing it.

The new CR runtime comes with v2018, and the new Paperless driver comes with v2019.  Here are a couple notes in our upgrade checklist to consider whether the issues apply.
With either issue you have to be careful if installing the new workstation software early (although the Paperless driver can be fixed easily, CR runtime upgrade has no easy fix... you're forced to go forward fully with the Sage KB correction).

Doug, I just did an upgrade from 2019 to 2022 2 weeks ago.  I was fine printing on the server with both versions.  Since they have a lot of users I installed 2022 on their workstations before I started the go live so they were not held up on a Monday morning.  They had issues printing from 2019.  For some I just ran the PL_AdvancedOptions_Ui in 2019.  This past weekend, I upgraded a client from 2020 to 2022.  I also put 2022 on their workstations before I started the go live on Friday.  They did not have any printing issues in version 2020.

Thanks @Michele Herzog  I always do the same as you... install the workstations in advance of go live.  I then always test the printing from the old version (the version they are currently using) to be sure it works after installing the new version.  Good to know there are no issues installing 2022 on the same server as 2019.
