Sage 100 2024.1 Advanced: Random hanging ( no error ) of registers

  • 1.  Sage 100 2024.1 Advanced: Random hanging ( no error ) of registers

    Posted 01-15-2025 10:30

I recently upgraded a customer to 2024.1 Advanced. They are reporting random hanging when posting. They report no error appears.

    I've suggested Anti-Virus exclusions.

They don't report issues with paperless ( no errors, the preview of the register seems to appear )

The error doesn't seem limited to just one workstation and is reported as somewhat random. It happened in the prior version though they say not as frequently.

Any suggestions of other areas to investigate?

    From the customer:

We have been having issues with batch posting hanging.  It is not consistent by module or by user.  Sometimes, the register posts, and the yes/no for the Daily Transaction Register appears and works fine (I have auto DTR off in Role Maintenance).  Other times, it hangs as "print/update" in the register.  The only way out is to kill the hung task and restart the register update.  It then works normally.  Again, It is not consistent by module or by user.  It happens in Cash Receipt, PO Invoice, AP Invoice, etc.

Is this 32-bit Sage 100 using Windows 11 workstations?

Good question and I should have included that they are 64-bit

Try posting from the server directly, to eliminate potential network issues?

This is a good idea. I am concerned that because they say it's sporadic that this might be a tough suggestion.

Check the activity log for error 86 or other network errors.

Also suggest they take a log of the times that interruptions happen.  If timings coincide with something like a backup, scheduled report, AV scan... that might give you a clue.

What @Kevin Moyes said. I'll add this. In my experience, a big reason for these exact symptoms particularly with journals and registers, in older versions of Sage (haven't heard it reported so much in newer versions) was caused by DEP (Data Execution Prevention) settings of the Sage server and the RDS / Terminal Server too if present. Below is the Sage KB ID you can paste in to the search find the article which tells you or IT to either change the DEP level to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" OR add DEP exceptions for Sage EXEs. If the latter is required, I always add exceptions for pvxwin32.exe, pvxinw64.exe, and all variations of LaunchXX.exe. Once done, it absolutely requires a reboot of the server to take effect.

I totally think it's worth a shot and Wayne you can just send the KB article to your customer's IT.

@Alnoor Cassim can you please tell me if the DEP suggestion applies if on Premium?  One of my clients has this problem and it is so frustrating and random and it doesn't happen with every user.  Also, they are on the 32-bit version.

The customer is still experiencing what they describe as random hanging during batch updates. What makes diagnosing these types of problems particularly tricky is that they're usually in companies with many users where you can't just shut down Sage ( or reboot the server ) mid-day. I'm also left wondering whether internally they've actually tried everything such as anti-virus and DEP.

Now I'm suggesting that they turn this over to Sage as they've done some reasonable due diligence and Sage is very likely to suggest retrying many of the things they've already tried.

I don't think that this is the cause. I'm posting just in case someone runs across this thread and might have a similar issue.

A different customer just called complaining that they were not getting any prompt to update at the end of invoice printing. Turns out the issue was that the customer had checked off the "Keep Windows Open After" which has the result of NOT prompting you to print the register until/unless you click "Print Add'l Documents".

I recently ran into that, as well. Definitely one of those things where you have to watch them doing it, in order to catch it. (I know I'm weird, but that issue just tickled me - at least it has a reason, and it's not some random stuff we'll never figure out.)

Good image/post @Wayne Schulz  I guess I never thought about that button and what it "actually" does (Print Add'l Documents).

Thanks @Wayne Schulz That makes sense and I would not have thought of that being viewed by the user as hanging!

Latest update from this customer " haven't had any hang ups all day after disabling Symantec"

PS - with "weird" environmentally caused issues I find I have usually provided the solution to the customer or their IT department and they swipe it away as in "no it can't be that" or claim they tried the fix but frequently haven't.

Then it's not at all unusual for me to spend 15 days trying another dozen things only to go back to the first thing that was suggested and have that actually be the cause/fix.
