Hello, 1996 calling on my rotary phone....... I actually had to look up your number in my Rolodex.
Believe it or not, I actually did this when I sat on the other other side of the desk using M90 v3.2 or so (95-99). The first of each month, I manually changed PO setup options for the next receipt number (YMMxxxx). The receiving department also changed their auto advancing number stamper to the same number so they could continue stamping the receipt paperwork. Oh, those were the days.....
Perhaps you can write a BOI script to do the same thing, but last I heard, you had to play by the same VI rules. Not sure. If that is not possible, you will have to train a trusted employee to change the setup field each month. Or better yet, write that process into a statement of work and charge them $200 each month.
Or just tell them that an SO number should not have meaning, it is just a number and use the ALE lookup to find the SO they are looking for. They will HATE you for a month, then LOVE you forever because you got them to stop using inefficient processes.
